Overview

A warehouse is a radio problem before it is an IT problem

Racking absorbs and reflects. Inventory levels change every day. A design that worked in an empty building fails once it is full.

Warehouse wireless is nothing like office wireless. Twelve-meter racking creates canyons that block signal at floor level while leaving the ceiling wide open. A building that surveys clean in January behaves completely differently in November when it is full of product. Metal shelving reflects, liquids absorb, and a forklift moving at speed needs to roam between access points without dropping the session. We survey with the racking loaded where possible, choose directional antennas aimed down aisles instead of omnidirectional units in the ceiling, and plan channels tightly so neighboring access points do not fight each other.

Roaming behavior is the part cheap installs get wrong. Handhelds hold on to a weak access point far longer than they should, so the fix is a deliberate design: consistent SSID and security settings across the building, fast roaming enabled, transmit power tuned down rather than up, and minimum data rates set so devices are forced to move on. Getting this right usually recovers more productivity than adding hardware. Our wireless design service covers the survey, the install and the validation walk.

Then the fleet. Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic handhelds, vehicle-mounted terminals on forklifts, wearable ring scanners and portable label printers all need to be staged identically, enrolled in management, updated on a schedule, and repaired or replaced quickly when they break. We build a device profile, use staging tools so a replacement unit is production-ready in minutes, keep spares on site, and track the fleet so you know what you own and what condition it is in.

The WMS sits behind all of it. Whether you run a dedicated system, a 3PL platform or warehouse modules inside your ERP, the infrastructure questions are the same: server or connectivity performance, database health, integration with EDI transactions for purchase orders and advance ship notices, label printing at pack stations, and the shipping software that talks to carriers. When a pack station stalls at 4pm, the cause is usually a print path or a network drop, not the application.

Physical environment matters here more than in most industries. Cold storage condenses moisture on hardware moved between zones, unconditioned Arizona warehouses run brutally hot in summer, and dock areas are dusty and wet. We specify sealed or rated enclosures, mount equipment where it can breathe, and run proper structured cabling from the dock and mezzanine back to the office IDF so nothing depends on a run of cable draped over a beam. The switching, firewall and segmentation work sits under network administration, and there is more for distribution operations at our industrial IT microsite.

Our scanners drop signal in certain aisles. Can that be fixed?

Almost always. The usual causes are omnidirectional antennas mounted in the ceiling of a high-bay building, too much transmit power creating overlap and sticky clients, or access points placed for convenience rather than coverage. A loaded survey identifies which it is, and the fix is often repositioning and retuning rather than buying more hardware.

Do we need Wi-Fi 6 in a warehouse?

It helps in dense environments, but antenna choice and placement matter far more than the standard on the box. A well-designed older-generation deployment beats a badly placed new one every time. If your handhelds are several years old they may not even negotiate the newer standard, so we look at the whole picture before recommending a rip and replace.

Can you manage our handheld scanner fleet?

Yes. We build a standard device profile, enroll units in management, push configuration and updates on a schedule, keep spares staged and ready, and handle repair or replacement through the manufacturer. Fleet visibility also tells you which units fail most often, which usually points at a specific process or a specific shift.

How do you handle cold storage areas?

Condensation is the main enemy, since hardware moving between freezer and ambient zones collects moisture. We use rated enclosures and heated units where required, keep access points out of the coldest air paths, specify batteries suited to low temperatures, and plan cabling so runs do not pass through repeated temperature transitions.

Our EDI transactions fail intermittently. Is that an IT problem?

Often, yes. Failed purchase orders, advance ship notices and invoices are frequently caused by connectivity drops, expired certificates, changed credentials or a translation service that stopped. We monitor those integrations so a failure raises an alert rather than being discovered when a customer calls about a chargeback.

What internet redundancy does a distribution center need?

More than most buildings, because a cloud WMS, carrier shipping systems and EDI all stop when the circuit drops. We recommend a primary fiber circuit with an automatic secondary path, usually cable or cellular, on a firewall that fails over without anyone touching it. For 24-hour operations we treat that as a requirement rather than an option.

Can you run cabling from the dock to the office?

Yes. Structured cabling is core work for us: copper for standard runs, fiber where distance or electrical noise demands it, proper pathways and terminations, and hardware in rated enclosures for dusty or wet zones. We label and document everything, so future changes do not start with a scavenger hunt.

How do you handle seasonal temporary staff?

Scoped accounts with an expiry date, device assignments tracked, and access limited to the systems that role actually needs. When the season ends, accounts close on a schedule rather than lingering for years. For a building that doubles its headcount in the fourth quarter, that discipline is the difference between clean records and an unmanageable access list.
