What you do in the first hour matters most

If a drive is making a clicking or grinding noise, power it off and leave it off. Those sounds mean the read heads are not tracking correctly, and every additional spin-up risks the heads contacting the platter surface. Each contact removes magnetic material permanently, and data that is physically scraped off is not coming back by any means at any price.

The same applies more gently to a drive that is simply failing. Reallocated sectors and read retries are signs that the disk is degrading, and the best possible use of its remaining life is one careful read-only image, not repeated attempts to boot Windows and copy a folder. If the machine still starts, resist the urge to keep working on it, because the operating system writes constantly and every write is a chance to overwrite something you needed.

How we approach a recovery

We work from an image, never from the original. The failing drive is connected through a write blocker and imaged read-only with hardware that tolerates bad sectors, retries intelligently and can skip and return rather than hanging forever on one unreadable area. All subsequent work happens against that image, so the original is touched exactly once.

From the image we rebuild the file system, recover partition structures, carve files by signature where the directory metadata is gone, and reconstruct what is there. For logical failures, deleted files, a formatted volume, a corrupted partition table, a failed operating system upgrade, success rates are good and the work is straightforward. Where we stop, and why we tell you

Some failures need a certified cleanroom: seized spindle motors, head crashes, drives that were dropped while running, physical damage from fire or flood. Opening a drive outside a controlled environment contaminates the platters and destroys the chance of a professional recovery afterward. We do not open drives, and we will not pretend a bench in a workshop is equivalent to a cleanroom.

When that is where you are, we say so on day one and refer you to a specialist. Those recoveries are expensive and we will tell you the realistic range before you commit, so you can weigh it against what the data is worth. A referral we make no money on is still better advice than a hopeful attempt that eliminates your remaining options.

SSDs deserve their own warning. When you delete a file on an SSD, TRIM tells the drive that those blocks are free, and the controller erases them during background garbage collection, often within minutes. Unlike a mechanical drive, where deleted data commonly survives until overwritten, on an SSD it is genuinely gone. Recovery from a TRIM-enabled SSD after deletion is frequently impossible regardless of who attempts it, and any provider promising otherwise is not being straight with you. SSD controller failures are also difficult, because data is encrypted and spread across chips by a controller-specific mapping.

RAID recovery is a different discipline again. We reconstruct arrays where the controller has failed or the configuration is lost, working out stripe size, disk order and parity rotation from the data itself. The critical thing is what you do first: do not let a controller re-initialize the array, and do not rebuild onto a replacement disk before the array has been imaged. Repeatedly powering it on

On a clicking drive, each spin-up risks head contact with the platter. Damage is cumulative and permanent, and it happens fast.

Running check disk on a failing drive

Repair utilities write to the disk and can discard the very metadata a recovery would use to rebuild the file structure.

Installing recovery software onto the same drive

The installer writes to the disk you are trying to recover from, and it may overwrite exactly the blocks holding your files.

Rebuilding a RAID array before imaging it

A rebuild writes across the array. If the configuration was wrong or a second disk is weak, you can lose everything mid-rebuild.

Opening the drive

Platters exposed to normal air pick up particles that destroy them on the next spin-up, and it ends any chance of a cleanroom recovery.

Freezing it or hitting it

The internet advice about freezers and taps is from a different era of drive design. Today it adds condensation and mechanical shock to an existing problem.

My drive is clicking. What should I do?

Power it off now and leave it off. Clicking usually means the read heads are not tracking properly, and every additional spin-up risks them contacting the platter surface, which destroys data permanently. Bring the drive in without trying anything else, and do not let anyone talk you into repeated attempts to boot it.

Can you recover files deleted from an SSD?

Often not, and we would rather say so than take your money. TRIM tells the SSD which blocks are free after a deletion, and the controller erases them during background maintenance, frequently within minutes. Unlike a mechanical drive, the data is genuinely gone. If the deletion just happened and the machine has been off since, it is worth an assessment.

How much does data recovery cost?

Logical recoveries and imaging of a degrading drive are workshop work priced by the job after assessment. Physical failures needing a certified cleanroom are considerably more expensive and are handled by a specialist, not by us. Do you open drives in a cleanroom?

Can you recover a RAID array?

Can ransomware-encrypted files be decrypted?

Realistically, no, not without the key. Modern ransomware uses encryption that cannot be broken by brute force. Recovery comes from backups, from volume shadow copies if the attacker missed them, from cloud version history, and from devices that were not affected. That is why immutable backup matters so much.

How long does recovery take?

Assessment is usually same day or next day. Imaging a healthy but degrading drive can take several hours; imaging a badly failing drive with heavy retries can take several days because it must be read slowly and carefully. Logical reconstruction afterward is typically a day or two.

Will you tell me if it is not worth trying?

Yes, plainly. Sometimes the honest answer is that the drive is beyond what we can do, that a cleanroom would cost more than the data is worth, or that the files were on a TRIM-enabled SSD and are gone. We would rather lose the job than take payment for something we do not believe will work.
