Laptops fail in specific, repeatable ways: hinges that tear their mounting points out of the case, charging ports that go intermittent, thermal systems that quietly give up around year four. We fix the underlying cause rather than the symptom, and for business clients we do it around your schedule rather than ours.
Common Faults
After a decade of benches, the failure list is short and predictable. Knowing the mechanism is what makes the repair last.
Hinge failure is the most misunderstood repair we do. The hinge itself is usually fine. What fails is the plastic it is bolted to: the threaded brass inserts and molded bosses inside the display bezel or the base tear loose after years of the hinge stiffening with age. The visible symptom is a display that will not stay put, a lid corner lifting away, or a crack spreading from the hinge across the palm rest. Replacing the hinge alone on this fault is pointless. It tears out again within months. A proper repair re-anchors the mounting points with new inserts and reinforcement, or replaces the housing where the damage has spread too far. Thin-chassis consumer models from most brands are the usual patients.
A laptop that only charges when the cable is held at an angle is a mechanical fault with an electrical presentation. On older machines with a barrel jack, the connector is soldered to the board and its ground pins fatigue from years of being levered by the cable. Reflowing the joints often restores it, though a jack with a cracked housing needs replacing outright. Many business models thankfully use a separate DC input board on a short cable, which turns a delicate solder job into a five-minute part swap.
USB-C charging brought its own failure modes. Ports wear mechanically, but the more interesting faults are on the power delivery side: a failed PD controller, a damaged CC line or a blown protection component leaves a machine that recognizes the charger but will not draw power. Those present as an intermittent charge that no cable swap fixes. We also see genuine damage from cheap third-party chargers that negotiate badly, which is one of the few pieces of consumer advice worth repeating: buy the manufacturer's charger, or a reputable one, and stop replacing the port every eighteen months.
Around year three or four, most laptops develop a cooling problem. Fine dust packs into the radiator fins on the exhaust side, thermal compound pumps out from between the die and the heatsink, the fan bearing dries out and starts to whine, and the machine begins throttling hard within minutes of any real work. In the Valley this arrives earlier than the national average, particularly for anyone whose laptop lives in a shop, a job site trailer or a truck. A full thermal service, complete disassembly, fin cleaning, new compound and thermal pads on the VRM and memory, fan replacement if the bearing has gone, frequently makes a machine feel two years younger for a small fraction of replacement cost.
Liquid damage is a race against corrosion, and what you do in the first ten minutes decides the outcome. Power off immediately by holding the power button, do not attempt to charge or start it to see if it works, and do not put it in rice, which does nothing useful while corrosion continues underneath. Bring it in. Proper triage means opening it, disconnecting the battery, and cleaning the board with isopropyl and ultrasonic equipment before the residue eats through traces and pads. Sugary drinks are considerably worse than water. A machine treated within hours often survives completely; the same spill left a week usually costs a board.
For business clients the calculation is different, and we work accordingly. Downtime is more expensive than the repair on almost every ticket, so the questions we ask first are whether the machine is under manufacturer warranty (in which case a warranty claim beats paying us), whether you hold spares, and how quickly the user needs to be working again. We keep encrypted data intact, hand back the machine with its BitLocker or FileVault state undisturbed, and where a repair will take days we can help you stand up a spare from your pool with the user's profile and Microsoft 365 data restored.
Fleets benefit enormously from standardization. When every laptop in the business is one of two models, we can hold sensible spare parts, a failed screen or keyboard is a same-day fix rather than a week waiting on a panel, and the imaging process stays simple. Where clients let purchasing drift into whatever was on sale, every repair becomes a research project. That is one of the standing recommendations that comes out of a technology roadmap conversation, and it pays for itself the first time a laptop dies on a deadline.
The parts we do not repair are worth naming honestly. Displays, batteries and keyboards on modern machines are assemblies rather than components, so we replace rather than repair them, covered in detail on our screen replacement, battery replacement and keyboard replacement pages. Usually not. The hinge normally survives while the plastic bosses and threaded inserts it bolts into tear loose. Replacing only the hinge on that fault fails again quickly. A lasting repair re-anchors the mounting points or replaces the housing where the cracking has spread.

Many board faults are genuinely repairable at component level, particularly power delivery, charging circuits and liquid corrosion. We diagnose before condemning. What we will not do is a heat-gun reflow on a BGA chip and present it as a permanent fix.
Common jobs like thermal service, storage upgrades and charging boards are often same or next business day. Anything needing an ordered part depends on availability, typically a few days. Liquid damage is assessed the day it arrives because time matters on those.
