Almost every Sony VAIO that reaches us is here for one of two reasons: there are files on it that matter, or someone wants one more year out of a machine they like.
Sony sold its PC business in 2014 and the VAIO name went with it. That means no new parts have entered the supply chain for these machines in a very long time, and what exists is old stock, salvage and third-party equivalents. It also means the drives inside them are old. A mechanical hard disk that has been spinning since 2012 is well past its design life, and every boot attempt is a roll of the dice.
If a VAIO comes in with data on it, we make a sector-level image of the drive before troubleshooting anything. Repair work involves repeated power cycles, and repeated power cycles are exactly what finishes off a marginal drive. Getting a copy first means that even if the hardware does not survive the diagnosis, your files do.
Where a drive is already clicking, not spinning up or failing to enumerate, we stop and treat it as a data recovery job rather than a repair. Those cases get worse with every attempt, and the difference between a recoverable disk and an unrecoverable one is often just how many times someone tried to boot it.
VAIO used a lot of custom engineering: proprietary battery packs, unusual panel sizes and connectors, custom charging boards and optical drive assemblies that were never shared with other brands. When one of those fails, the question is not whether we can fit it but whether the part exists at all. We check availability before quoting so you are not left waiting on a search that will never end.
Some repairs remain very practical. Replacing an aging hard disk with an SSD, adding memory where slots exist, cleaning the cooling system and repairing a DC jack are all standard work with standard parts, and they can genuinely make an older VAIO pleasant to use again. The line we draw is at proprietary assemblies with no supply.
Most surviving VAIO machines shipped with Windows 7 or Windows 8, and Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft support in October 2025. A machine running an operating system that no longer receives security updates should not be handling email, banking or anything connected to a business network. That is a security position, not a sales pitch.
The migration is the part people dread and it is the part we handle well. We move documents, photos, mail profiles, browser data, license keys where they transfer and application settings onto the new machine, and we keep the old drive as an image so nothing is stranded. Where an old VAIO runs one irreplaceable legacy application, we look at whether isolating it or running it in a virtual machine is safer than keeping the original hardware on the network.
There is one other Sony thread worth mentioning. Plenty of production and media businesses around the East Valley work with Sony camera formats and professional media, and the workstations that ingest, transcode and archive that footage are very much our territory: storage throughput, RAID and backup design, color-accurate display setup and reliable ingest workflows. That is workstation and storage work rather than VAIO repair, and the standards are higher because the media is often irreplaceable. If the disk in an old machine is making noise, every power-on reduces what can be recovered. Power it down and bring it in. Recovery odds are far better before someone has tried repeatedly to make it work.

We do, within limits. Standard work such as storage, memory, cooling, charging ports and keyboards is usually practical. Proprietary parts including custom batteries, panels and charging boards are the constraint, because Sony left the PC business in 2014 and no new stock has entered the supply chain since.
Usually yes. In most cases the drive is still readable even when the machine is not, and we can image it and extract everything. If the disk itself has failed mechanically it becomes a recovery job, and the odds are much better if nobody has repeatedly tried to boot it first.
If the rest of the machine is sound and you have a specific reason to keep it, yes. Replacing a decade-old mechanical drive with an SSD transforms responsiveness and removes the most likely component to fail. What it cannot fix is an unsupported operating system, which is the larger issue.
For anything connected to the internet, yes. It stopped receiving security updates years ago, and Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025 as well. An unpatched machine handling email, banking or business data is a genuine risk regardless of how well it still works.

That is a common reason people keep aging hardware. Often the safest answer is running that application in a virtual machine on modern hardware, or isolating it from the network entirely. Leaving an unpatched physical machine on your business network is the option we would rule out first.
Yes. Ingest and editing workstations need storage throughput, sensible RAID design and a real backup strategy, because production media is frequently irreplaceable. That is workstation and storage work rather than laptop repair, and we treat the backup side as the most important part.
We recover everything we can, confirm you have it, then wipe or physically destroy the storage before responsible disposal. Nothing leaves with readable data on it. If you would rather keep the drive yourself, we will hand it to you instead.
