Drop and deformation damage
Base and palm rest damage assessed properly so we replace the part that failed rather than the whole machine.
LG Repair
The LG gram is one of the lightest business laptops you can buy, and that weight saving comes from a magnesium chassis with very little material in it. That changes how it breaks and how it has to be repaired. We also service LG monitors and the UltraFine displays that so many Mac users depend on.
Why gram Is Different
The gram achieves its weight with a magnesium alloy shell that is remarkably strong for its mass and remarkably thin.
Pick up a 17-inch gram and it feels like a display model with the internals removed. That impression comes from a magnesium alloy chassis using very little material, and it changes the failure modes completely. A dropped gram usually does not crack its screen the way a plastic notebook does. Instead the impact travels into the chassis, and the palm rest or the base deforms slightly around the corner it landed on. That deformation is enough to stop the lid closing evenly, to bind a hinge, or to put constant tension on the display cable running through it.
The hinges themselves deserve particular attention. On any ultralight, the hinge mounts anchor into thin metal, and repeated opening from one corner rather than the centre eventually stresses those mounting points. The early warning sign is a lid that feels notchy on one side or a small gap appearing where the display bezel meets the base. Caught at that stage it is a straightforward repair. Left alone, the mount pulls through, the display housing cracks around it, and you are looking at both a hinge and a lid assembly.
The gram ships with a large battery relative to its weight, and its all-day runtime is the main reason people buy one. That runtime falls with age like every lithium battery, but the rate depends heavily on how it is charged. LG includes a control application with a battery charge limit that caps charging around eighty percent, and it is genuinely worth enabling on any gram that lives permanently on a desk plugged in. A battery held at full charge and warm is a battery that ages fast.
Here is where the gram is genuinely better than its ultralight competitors. Many models pair soldered memory with a spare memory slot, so the total can be increased rather than being fixed forever, and several models include a second internal storage slot alongside the primary drive. For an owner who bought a base configuration and now feels the limits, adding storage or memory to an existing gram is far cheaper than replacing the machine, and it is a genuinely worthwhile job.
The UltraFine displays are a special case because they are effectively Apple accessories made by LG. They rely on the Mac for brightness and settings rather than having a normal on-screen menu, their firmware arrives through macOS updates, and they are fussy about cables in a way that generates a lot of support calls. A display that flickers, will not wake with the Mac, or refuses to run at full resolution is very often a cable or port issue rather than a failing monitor. Early 5K units also had a well-documented sensitivity to being placed close to wireless routers. We diagnose the whole chain before anyone buys anything, and our Mac support team handles the machine at the other end of the cable.
A gram with a deformed corner and a binding hinge often looks unrepairable and frequently is not. Chassis, hinge and lid assembly are separate parts, and a good diagnosis usually finds that only one of them needs replacing.

Why Orca
Thin machines punish rushed work in ways thicker laptops forgive.
Overtightening a screw into thin magnesium strips the thread permanently. We use the right tools and the right feel.
On a gram the display cable shares its channel with the hinge, so hinge work always includes a cable inspection.
gram parts are model-specific and not always on the shelf. We confirm availability before you commit to anything.
Fan profiles, charge limit and function keys all come from LG software that must be reinstalled after a rebuild.
On monitors we will tell you when a repair costs more than a replacement, even when it means no work for us.
Your pod handles the laptop, the monitor and the Mac at the other end of it, without handing you between people.
That is usually chassis deformation at the corner that took the impact rather than a broken lid. The base or palm rest bends slightly, which puts the hinge out of alignment. It is repairable, and catching it early matters because a misaligned hinge slowly damages the display cable that runs beside it.
Several models do include a second internal storage slot alongside the primary one, which is unusual in a laptop this light. Where it exists it is an excellent upgrade, because you gain capacity without disturbing the existing installation. We check your specific board before quoting.
Battery capacity falls with cycles and with heat, and a laptop that lives plugged in at full charge ages faster. Enable the charge limit in LG's control software if the machine is mostly desk-bound. When capacity has genuinely dropped, a replacement pack restores runtime, though the part is model-specific and can take a few days to source.
Those functions come from LG's own control application rather than from Windows. Without it you lose the charge limit, the fan profiles, the keyboard function keys and several power settings. Reinstalling the vendor software restores all of it, and we capture the full driver set before any rebuild.
It depends where the fault is. Power supply and backlight driver failures are common and genuinely repairable. A failed panel is not economic, because the part and labour together tend to approach the price of a new monitor with a warranty. We diagnose to board level and tell you which you have.
Start with the cable and the port. UltraFine displays depend on high-bandwidth cables and are sensitive to substitutes, and their firmware arrives through macOS updates rather than a menu on the monitor. We test the full chain, including the Mac's power delivery, before assuming the display is at fault.
