Battery complaints are easy to verify: cycle count, design capacity against current full charge capacity, and how the machine behaves unplugged under real load. If the pack is worn we replace it with cells worth fitting. If it is swollen, it comes out of service today, not next week.
Overview
Poor runtime is not always the pack. Ten minutes of data tells you whether you have a worn battery, a power-hungry process or a charging fault.
Every modern laptop reports its own condition. On Windows, a battery report from the command line gives you design capacity, current full charge capacity and the full cycle count, along with a usage history that shows how runtime has changed over months. On a Mac, System Information gives cycle count and a condition rating. The comparison that matters is full charge capacity against design capacity: a pack holding 80 percent or more of its original capacity is healthy, one at 60 percent is noticeably worse, and anything under about half is why the machine dies at lunchtime.
A cycle is one full discharge worth of energy, not one unplugging. Two days of using 50 percent each is one cycle. Manufacturers rate consumer packs for a few hundred cycles to 80 percent capacity, while Apple designs its recent notebook batteries for around a thousand. A three-year-old machine used daily and always plugged in may have surprisingly few cycles and still be badly degraded, because calendar age and heat degrade lithium cells independently of use.
Which brings us to the local factor. Heat is the dominant killer of lithium-ion, and Arizona supplies it generously. A laptop left in a car in Gilbert in July experiences interior temperatures far beyond anything the cell chemistry was designed to sit at, and the damage is permanent and cumulative. Working on a patio in summer, leaving a machine on a car seat between appointments, or running a laptop with blocked vents on a bed all shorten pack life measurably. The single worst combination is a battery held at 100 percent charge while hot, which is exactly what a docked laptop in a warm office does all day, every day.
Lithium pouch cells swell when they degrade or are damaged, because the electrolyte breaks down and generates gas. The early signs are mechanical: a trackpad that sits proud or clicks unevenly, a case that will not sit flat, a keyboard that feels bowed, a bottom cover with a visible gap, or a display that no longer closes flush. Once you see any of those, the machine should be shut down and taken out of service immediately.
Do not keep using it, do not keep charging it, and above all do not press on it or attempt to puncture or pry the pack. A punctured cell can vent and ignite, and lithium fires are not something you extinguish casually. Power the machine off, put it somewhere non-flammable away from paper and fabric, and bring it in. We remove swollen packs with the right tools, dispose of them through proper channels rather than a bin, and check whether the expansion has damaged the trackpad, the bottom cover or the display assembly, which it frequently has.
On the replacement itself, cell quality is the whole argument. A genuine or reputable pack contains cells from a known manufacturer, a properly calibrated battery management circuit and honest capacity figures. Cheap aftermarket packs frequently advertise capacities that the cells cannot physically deliver, report incorrect state of charge so the machine shuts down at what it thinks is 30 percent, degrade rapidly, and are far more likely to swell. Given that the failure mode of a bad battery is a fire risk inside a device people put on their laps, this is not the component to economise on. We fit genuine parts where they are available and reasonably priced, and quality equivalents from suppliers we have used long enough to trust where they are not.
Brand specifics matter too. Many MacBooks have the battery bonded into the top case with adhesive, so on some models the official service part includes the palm rest and keyboard, and on others the cells are removed with pull tabs and solvent, a job that requires patience and the right approach rather than brute force. Apple also flags non-genuine batteries in the system report and may not display health information for them. Dell machines expose charge behavior through BIOS and Dell Power Manager, including custom and primarily-AC charge profiles, and machines with fast-charge features can run hotter during a top-up. HP exposes similar controls through Battery Health Manager in BIOS, and both HP and Lenovo publish battery firmware updates that occasionally change charging behavior, which is a good reason to keep firmware current on our maintenance schedule.
The best thing you can do for a new pack costs nothing. If the laptop lives mostly on a desk, set a charge threshold, 80 percent is the common setting, available through Dell Power Manager, Lenovo's conservation mode, HP's Battery Health Manager or macOS optimized charging, so the cells are not held at full charge in a warm room indefinitely. Keep the vents clear so battery temperature stays down, which is another reason a thermal service pays for itself. And never store a laptop long-term at either empty or full; around half charge in a cool place is where lithium is happiest.
