Overview
School IT is defined by a schedule that does not move and a user base that does not wait.
Classroom wireless is a density challenge that office design never faces. Thirty students in one room join simultaneously at the bell, then the class next door does the same. Coverage maps look fine and the experience is still bad, because the constraint is how many devices one access point can serve well, not whether there is signal. We design with an access point per classroom where the budget allows, tune power down so cells stay small, plan channels carefully in the 5GHz band, and hardwire anything that does not have to be wireless. Device fleets are the other half. Chromebooks managed through the Google Admin console, iPads through Apple School Manager and a device management platform, and Windows laptops through Intune all follow the same lifecycle: procure, enroll, tag, assign, support, repair, retire. The details are where schools lose time, enrollment that is not zero-touch, no asset tagging, no clear damage and insurance process, no spare pool, and no plan for the units that come back in June with cracked screens. We build the process and run it, so the fleet is a managed asset rather than a drawer full of chargers.
Filtering and safety obligations sit on top. Schools accepting E-Rate funding carry CIPA filtering and internet safety policy requirements, and most schools want filtering regardless. Platforms such as Securly, Lightspeed Systems, GoGuardian or DNS-layer filtering work well when they are configured with the school’s actual policy in mind, including what happens on take-home devices and how alerts about student wellbeing reach the right staff member quickly. Over-filtering breaks lessons; under-filtering breaks trust. Getting the balance right is an ongoing conversation with your team.
Student data is where FERPA lives. Education records need controlled access and a defensible answer to who can see what. In practice that means role-based access to your student information system, PowerSchool, Blackbaud, FACTS or Veracross, single sign-on and rostering through a service like Clever or ClassLink rather than spreadsheets emailed between staff, prompt offboarding when a teacher leaves, and a data privacy agreement with every education technology vendor that receives student information. We implement the technical controls and keep the evidence. Your administration owns the policy and the annual notifications.
Then the summer. Between the last day and the first in-service day, schools reimage fleets, replace hardware, rebuild labs, roll student accounts to the next grade and update the SIS. That window is short, and it competes with facilities work. We plan it with your leadership in the spring, order hardware early for lead times, and execute against a schedule that finishes before staff return. We implement access controls, encryption, logging and vendor review for systems holding student records, and we help you keep evidence. Annual notification, directory information policy and disclosure decisions belong to the school.

Density design. The issue is usually too few access points covering too many devices, or access points at maximum power creating large overlapping cells that interfere with each other. The fix is more units at lower power, ideally one per classroom, with careful channel planning and wired connections for anything stationary such as projectors and desktop machines.

Mixed fleets are normal in schools, and the important thing is that each platform is genuinely managed rather than handed out and hoped for.

We help you maintain the evidence. The school retains ownership of policy, annual notification and any disclosure decisions, since those are administrative rather than technical.
It depends on your device platform and whether devices go home. DNS-layer filtering is simple and covers the whole network; platform-specific tools give better per-student visibility and wellbeing alerting on take-home devices. We configure whichever fits, tuned to your policy, and we revisit it, because a filter that blocks legitimate classroom resources gets worked around by staff.
March at the latest. Hardware lead times are unpredictable, and a device order placed in June may not arrive before school starts. We assess in the spring, price the plan, get board or leadership approval, order early, and execute against a schedule that finishes before in-service week rather than during it.
With a defined process rather than case-by-case improvisation. Assets are tagged and assigned to a student, damage is logged with the device, repairs go through a consistent channel, and a spare pool means a student is back to work the same day. Over a year that data also tells you which model, which grade and which policy is actually driving your repair costs.
Yes. Small schools often have the same obligations as large districts with none of the internal IT staff. Flat per-user pricing and a small assigned pod means you get consistent people who learn your campus, without funding a full-time position. We work with charters, private schools, microschools and adult training centers.
We can implement and document the technical side, including filtering and the network infrastructure typically involved, and we can work with whoever handles your E-Rate applications. We are not an E-Rate consultant and we do not file on your behalf, so schools pursuing funding should keep their specialist for the application process itself.
