Windows Performance
Windows can deliberately slow your computer down to save battery. This guide shows you where the power mode lives in Windows 11, what each option changes, and how to tell whether power settings are actually your problem. It takes about five minutes.
Why It Matters
Every Windows machine has a power mode that sets a ceiling on processor speed. On a laptop, that ceiling drops the moment you unplug the charger.
Modern processors do not run at one fixed speed. They climb when there is work to do and settle back when there is not. The power mode tells the processor how aggressively it is allowed to climb. Set to save battery, the machine feels sluggish opening programs and loading web pages, even though nothing is broken and nothing is failing.
This is the most common reason a laptop feels quick at a desk and slow on the couch. Unplugged, Windows applies a tighter ceiling. Drop below 20 percent battery and Battery saver switches itself on, which tightens the ceiling further and pauses background syncing at the same time. People often assume the computer is dying when it is doing exactly what it was configured to do.
Power mode is worth checking first because it costs nothing and takes a minute. Be realistic about what it can do, though. It will not repair a failing hard drive, it will not create memory a machine does not have, and it will not remove malware. A drive on its way out produces freezes, long pauses and sometimes clicking rather than steady slowness, and that becomes a data recovery conversation before it is a performance one. If the machine has 4GB of memory and you keep a dozen browser tabs open, a memory upgrade is the fix, not a drop-down.
If the fans are loud and the chassis is hot to the touch, the slowness is thermal. A laptop packed with dust throttles no matter which power mode you pick. Sort the cooling out first, then come back to this setting.
Step by Step
Seven steps. Nothing here needs a restart, and every one of them can be set straight back.
Press Windows key + I. Settings opens with System selected at the top of the left column. You can also press the Windows key, type Settings and press Enter.
Select System in the left column, then Power & battery. On a desktop the entry is named Power instead, because there is no battery to report on. The page shows a usage chart on laptops with collapsible sections underneath.
Find Power mode near the top of the page and open the drop-down. Choose Best performance if the machine feels slow, Balanced for everyday use, or Best power efficiency when you need the battery to last. The change applies immediately with no restart and no confirmation.
Connect the charger, open the same drop-down and set it the way you want it for plugged-in use. Then open the two or three programs that felt slow. If they are noticeably quicker on power, power management was the limit rather than the hardware.
Still on the Power & battery page, expand Battery saver. By default it turns itself on at 20 percent battery, and while it is on Windows limits performance and pauses background activity. You can change the trigger level, set it to Never, or switch it on now with the button beside it.
Open Energy recommendations on the same page. Windows lists changes that reduce power use, such as shorter screen timeouts and a darker background. Apply them individually or use Apply all. Nothing in the list is destructive and every item can be changed back.
Expand Screen and sleep. Four drop-downs control when the screen turns off and when the PC sleeps, separately for battery and plugged in. These do not affect speed, but they decide how long the machine sits awake burning power doing nothing.
Also Worth Checking
Slowness has a short list of usual causes. Work through them in this order.
Open File Explorer, select This PC and look at the bar under Local Disk (C:). A drive with almost nothing left slows the whole system down. Our separate guide on freeing up disk space covers the safe way to clear it.
Right-click the Start button and choose Task Manager. Sort the Processes list by CPU, then by Memory, then by Disk. Something sitting near 100 percent tells you where to look next, and often names the culprit outright.

A hot chassis and a loud fan mean the processor is throttling for heat, not for battery. Dust-packed cooling fins are normal in Arizona and it is a bench job rather than a settings change, which is standard laptop repair work.
In Task Manager, open the Performance tab and select Memory. If the total is 4GB and the in-use figure sits near it all day, no setting will help. Adding memory will, and on most laptops it is a quick job.

Yes, noticeably. The laptop also runs warmer and the fan gets louder. That is a fair trade at a desk with the charger connected. On a plane or in a long meeting, Balanced or Best power efficiency buys you a lot more runtime for a small loss of speed.
Windows 10 uses a slider rather than a drop-down. Click the battery icon in the notification area and drag it from Best battery life toward Best performance. On a desktop, the equivalent is Power Options in Control Panel. Keep in mind that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so a machine still running it needs a plan.
That usually means a custom power plan is active, often one installed by the PC manufacturer, or that a workplace policy is managing power settings. Some desktops do not show the option at all. Check the manufacturer's own control panel, which frequently has its own performance profiles.
No. The processor still respects its own temperature and power limits and will slow itself down long before it gets into trouble. All you are doing is removing a ceiling that Windows applied on top of that. You can set it back to Balanced at any time.
