Open your storage breakdown
Press the Windows key and I to open Settings, then go to System > Storage. Windows scans the drive and lists categories by size, largest first. Give it a few seconds to finish counting before you judge anything.

Free up disk space without a cleaner tool
Windows keeps a surprising amount of space tied up in temporary files, old update leftovers and downloads you forgot about. This guide clears it using only the tools already in Windows 11 and Windows 10. Most people recover real space in under ten minutes.

Why It Fills Up
Where the space actually went
A nearly full drive is not only inconvenient. Windows needs working room to install updates, open files and manage memory, so a full drive turns into a slow and unreliable one.
The bar in File Explorer turns red when a drive is close to full, and that is usually the first warning anyone notices. By then updates may already be failing to install, apps take longer to open, and saving a large file throws an error. Clearing space is not maintenance theater. It is the fix for a specific set of problems.
The space is rarely where people assume. Documents and photos are usually small compared to the real culprits: leftovers from Windows updates, temporary files from apps that crashed before they cleaned up, a Downloads folder holding years of installers, a Recycle Bin no one has emptied, and one or two large programs that get opened once a year. Games and creative apps are the usual heavyweights. If you find one you no longer use, our guide on how to uninstall programs safely covers the right way to remove it.
Work through the steps below in order. Everything here is a Windows feature, nothing needs to be downloaded, and none of it touches your personal files unless you specifically tick a box that says it will. If the drive fills up again within weeks, that is a different problem, and the checks further down explain how to find it. A genuinely undersized drive is a hardware conversation, not a cleanup one, and a larger SSD upgrade ends the cycle for good.
Skip the cleaner and optimizer tools
The ads promising to reclaim gigabytes in one click are a well-worn route for a working PC to pick up adware, a fake support pop-up or a broken registry. Windows already has everything in this guide. Nothing you download from a pop-up will do it better.

Clear the drive in the right order
Start with the safest and largest wins. By the end of step four most machines have recovered enough space to install updates again.

Run Cleanup recommendations
On the Storage page, select Cleanup recommendations. Windows groups the safe wins into Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud and Unused apps. Expand each heading, tick what you recognize as disposable, then select the Clean up button under that group.

Remove temporary files
Back on the Storage page, select Temporary files. Read the checkbox list before you act: Windows Update Cleanup and Delivery Optimization Files are usually the two biggest and both are safe to remove. Leave Downloads unchecked here, because that box deletes the whole folder. Select Remove files when you are happy with the selection.

Empty the Recycle Bin
Deleted files keep taking up space until the bin is emptied. Open the Recycle Bin from the desktop, glance through it for anything you still want, then select Empty Recycle Bin on the toolbar. Once it is emptied those files are gone, so look before you clear.

Sort out the Downloads folder
Open File Explorer, select Downloads in the left pane, switch to Details view and click the Size column heading to sort largest first. Installers, disc images and old zip archives collect here for years. Delete the ones you will never open again and leave anything you are unsure about.

Uninstall large apps you do not use
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and change Sort by to Size. The biggest programs move to the top. Use the three dots next to an entry and choose Uninstall. Removing a program from this list is the correct method, and deleting its folder by hand is not.

Turn on Storage Sense so it stays clear
Go back to Settings > System > Storage and turn on Storage Sense, then select it to open the schedule. It can empty the Recycle Bin and the Downloads folder after a chosen number of days, clear temporary files automatically, and make older cloud files online-only. Set the Downloads option to Never if you want to keep that folder under your own control.

The parts people get wrong
Related settings, common mistakes, and what to look at when the numbers still do not add up.
OneDrive Files On-Demand
If you use OneDrive, right-click its taskbar icon, open Settings, and check that Files On-Demand is enabled. Files then show as online-only with a cloud icon and download on first open. In File Explorer you can right-click any OneDrive folder and choose Free up space to push its contents back to the cloud without deleting anything.
The leftover previous Windows installation
After a major Windows feature update, the old installation is kept so you can roll back. It is large, it shows up in Temporary files as Previous Windows installation(s), and Windows deletes it automatically after a while. Remove it manually only if you are certain the update went fine, because clearing it removes the option to go back.
Never delete folders from the C drive by hand
Anything under Windows, Program Files or ProgramData is there for a reason, and deleting it does not free meaningful space. It breaks apps and sometimes the operating system. If a folder looks huge and you cannot identify it, that is a good moment to ask rather than experiment.
Move new content somewhere else
On a machine with a small system drive and a second drive or a large SD card, go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved. You can send new apps, documents, music, photos and videos to the other drive so the system drive stops filling.
A full drive and a slow PC are not the same thing
Freeing space fixes failed updates and save errors. It does not fix a machine that has been slow since the day it was bought. If speed is the real complaint, start with our guide on how to speed up a slow PC instead.
When the drive is genuinely too small
Budget laptops shipped with small eMMC storage cannot be cleaned into comfort. If the machine is full again a month after every cleanup, the honest answer is more storage or a different machine, and our computer repair bench can tell you which one applies to yours.
Disk space questions
Is it safe to tick everything under Temporary files?
Almost. The one box to think about is Downloads, because it deletes the entire contents of that folder rather than old junk. Recycle Bin is also worth checking first. Everything else in that list is genuinely temporary and Windows will recreate what it needs.
What is Delivery Optimization Files and can I remove it?
It is a cache of Windows update data that your PC can share with other machines on the same network to save bandwidth. Removing it is safe and often frees a lot of space. Windows rebuilds it the next time updates run.
Storage Sense deleted something I wanted. Can I get it back?
If it was cleared from the Recycle Bin, it is not recoverable through Windows. That is why the Downloads setting in Storage Sense is worth setting to Never unless you know you treat that folder as disposable. Anything genuinely important belongs in a backed up folder, not in Downloads.
Does Disk Cleanup still exist in Windows 11?
Yes. Search the Start menu for Disk Cleanup and it opens the older tool, including Clean up system files. The Storage page in Settings covers the same ground with clearer wording, which is why this guide uses it. Either one is fine.
My drive filled up again within a month. What is doing that?
The usual suspects are an app writing large log or cache files, a photo or video library syncing down from a phone, or a game updating repeatedly. Open Settings > System > Storage, note the category sizes today, then check the same page in a week to see which one grew. That comparison usually names the culprit.
A drive that keeps filling up is telling you something.
