Off-the-shelf servers are configured to hit a price point, which usually means too little memory, the wrong storage and a controller chosen for cost. We spec each build against what your applications actually do, then assemble, burn in and document it.
Approach
The question is not how much server you can afford. It is what the applications actually demand: how many concurrent users, how database-heavy the work is, whether it will host virtual machines, and how much the dataset will grow over five years.
A file server for fifteen people has almost nothing in common with a Hyper-V host running a SQL-backed practice management system, yet both get sold the same mid-range box constantly. Database work is dominated by random input and output, so it wants NVMe storage and generous memory. File serving is throughput work that tolerates larger, slower drives. Virtualisation hosts need memory headroom above everything, because memory is the resource that runs out first and is most disruptive to add later.
ECC memory is standard on every server we build. It detects and corrects single-bit errors that would otherwise silently corrupt data or crash the machine, and on a device holding your accounting or patient records that is not a place to save money. Consumer memory in a server is a false economy we see regularly in machines built by general PC shops.
Storage gets a real hardware RAID controller with a battery or flash-backed write cache, not motherboard fake-RAID that depends on drivers and cannot be moved to another chassis. Drives are enterprise models rated for continuous duty with appropriate error recovery timing, because desktop drives in an array cause the array to drop them under load. Redundant power supplies where uptime justifies it, and a chassis with genuine airflow rather than decorative fans.
Tower servers suit offices with no rack and a spare closet or corner. Rack builds suit anyone with a cabinet, a structured cabling setup or several devices to consolidate, and they cool more predictably. We size the decision on your space, not on what looks impressive.
Noise matters more than people expect. Rack chassis with small high-speed fans are genuinely loud, and a 2U server in an open office makes the room unpleasant. Where a server has to live in occupied space we build quiet: larger low-RPM fans, tower chassis with sound damping, and a fan curve tuned for the actual thermal load. In an Arizona office, the closet it sits in also needs ventilation or cooling, and we will say so before delivery rather than after the first July.
Every build is burned in before it leaves us: memory testing, drive surface verification, sustained load testing and thermal monitoring under stress. Infant mortality in components is real, and catching it here is far better than discovering it in week two of production. You then receive documentation covering the build specification, RAID configuration, firmware levels, licence keys and recovery steps.
Hardware is purchased in your name with manufacturer warranties in your name. There is no lease, no rental and no arrangement where the server stops being yours if you leave us. Sometimes we do recommend buying one, particularly where you want next-business-day on-site hardware support from the manufacturer. Building wins when the catalog configurations force compromises, when you need a specific storage layout, or when a quiet chassis for an occupied office matters more than a badge.
On a machine holding your business data, yes. ECC detects and corrects single-bit errors that would otherwise corrupt files silently or crash the server. The cost difference is small against the value of the data, and we do not build servers without it.
For most small business file and application servers, RAID 10 for performance-sensitive workloads and RAID 6 for large capacity where rebuild time matters. We avoid RAID 5 on large modern drives because rebuild windows are long enough that a second failure is a real risk. RAID is redundancy, not backup, either way.
Rack if you have a cabinet or plan to consolidate several devices, because cooling and cable management are more predictable. Tower if you have no rack and a ventilated closet or corner. We choose on your space and noise tolerance, not on appearance.
A standard rack server in open office space is genuinely intrusive. Our quiet builds use tower chassis, larger low-RPM fans and damping, with fan curves tuned to the real thermal load. Tell us where it will sit and we will design for that room.
Component warranties come from the manufacturers in your name, with terms varying by part, and we can specify longer-warranty enterprise parts where you want a five-year horizon. We also cover our own build workmanship. Nothing about the arrangement depends on you staying a client.
Yes, and that is usually part of the project. We plan the cutover, move roles, data and applications in a controlled window with a rollback path, and keep the old machine intact until the new one has proven itself. Our data migration page covers the method in detail.
We build and configure in Gilbert and can ship, but a server that arrives without hands to install and cable it is only half a project. For out-of-state clients we normally recommend a manufacturer build with on-site warranty and handle the configuration remotely instead.
