OS Reinstallation

A clean install that keeps everything that matters

A reinstall is easy. A reinstall where nothing is lost, every driver is the right one, the license reactivates without a phone call and the machine comes back more secure than it left is a different job. We take a full image before we touch anything, so there is always a way back.

🛡 Image Taken First Vendor Drivers Only💰 License Handled Never Outsourced

Overview

The order of operations is the whole job

Reinstalling Windows takes twenty minutes. Everything that happens before and after it is what separates a good job from a phone call three days later.

Before anything else, we take a full sector-level image of the existing drive to separate storage. Not a file copy, an image. It costs an hour and it means that when someone remembers on Thursday that their old email archive lived in a folder nobody mentioned, we can go and get it. Every reinstall we have ever regretted was one where somebody trusted a checklist instead of taking an image. On a failing drive we image with a tool that handles read errors gracefully rather than pushing a dying disk through repeated retries.

What actually needs preserving

User documents are the obvious part and the part everyone remembers. The data that gets lost lives elsewhere, mostly in hidden AppData folders: Outlook signatures and autocomplete files, PST and OST archives that were never moved to the server, Sticky Notes stored in a small database file, browser profiles with bookmarks and saved sessions, Thunderbird mail stores, license and activation files for niche software, saved game data, and QuickBooks company files that someone left in an application directory instead of Documents.

We also capture the things that make a machine feel like yours: mapped drives, printer connections, VPN profiles, Wi-Fi credentials, application preferences and the specific configuration of whatever line-of-business software runs the business. Then we take an inventory of installed programs, because reinstall lists assembled from memory always miss three things.

Media, drivers and the trap on modern laptops

Installation media comes from Microsoft directly or from Apple's own recovery, never from a random ISO. On some recent Intel laptops the installer will not see the internal NVMe drive at all until the Intel RST or VMD storage driver is loaded during setup, a moment that has convinced plenty of capable people that a perfectly healthy drive had died. We stage that driver on the installer so it never comes up.

Drivers come from the manufacturer's support page keyed to the service tag or serial number, in the right order: chipset first, then storage controller, management engine, network, graphics, audio and finally the vendor utilities worth keeping. Letting Windows Update supply everything looks convenient and produces a machine with generic drivers, missing function keys, no fan curve control and a fingerprint reader that never works. On business machines we finish with the vendor's own update utility so firmware and drivers stay consistent going forward.

Licensing is usually simpler than people fear. Windows on any OEM machine from the last decade has its product key embedded in the UEFI firmware, so a clean install of the same edition activates itself without anyone typing anything. Retail copies and machines upgraded from an older Windows carry a digital entitlement tied to a hardware hash, which is why linking the license to a Microsoft account before a major hardware change is worth thirty seconds. Businesses on volume licensing activate against KMS or with a MAK. Microsoft 365 apps reinstall and sign in. Where a paid application uses seat-based activation, Adobe, most CAD packages, some accounting software, we deactivate before the wipe and reactivate after, which avoids a support ticket with the vendor.

Then the part most reinstall jobs skip: bringing the machine back better than it was. We install only what you actually use, from clean vendor sources rather than the download aggregator sites that bundle junk. Windows Update runs to completion, including the cumulative update and the current servicing stack, before the machine is handed back. BitLocker or FileVault goes on with the recovery key stored somewhere you can retrieve it. The day-to-day account becomes a standard user rather than an administrator, which quietly defeats a large share of commodity malware. Endpoint protection is installed and confirmed reporting, browsers are set up with the profile signed in, and the preinstalled trialware never comes back.

We will also tell you when a reinstall is not the answer. Random freezes, blue screens across different drivers and applications that crash inconsistently are usually hardware, failing memory, a dying SSD, thermal throttling or a marginal power supply, and reinstalling simply buys a few clean-feeling days before the same behavior returns. In those cases we run diagnostics first, which is what our hardware diagnosis page is about. If the machine is fundamentally healthy but slow, an SSD upgrade combined with a clean install is one of the best value pieces of work in the business.

Always ask for the image

A sector-level image taken before the wipe is your insurance policy. Any shop that skips it is saving an hour of their time with your data.

What We Do

Every reinstall, every time

The checklist does not shorten because the machine looks simple.

Full drive image first

A sector-level backup to separate storage before anything is erased, retained until you confirm everything you needed came across.

Deep data capture

Documents plus the hidden things: mail stores, signatures, browser profiles, license files, application data and configuration.

Clean official media

Installation media from Microsoft or Apple, with storage drivers staged so modern NVMe laptops are seen during setup.

Vendor driver stack

Drivers pulled by service tag in the correct order, plus firmware updates, so function keys, sleep and thermals all behave.

License and activation

UEFI-embedded keys, digital entitlements, volume licensing and seat-based application deactivation handled before and after.

Hardened handover

Full patch level, disk encryption with a recoverable key, standard user account, endpoint protection installed and no bloatware.

The Process

How a reinstall runs with us

01

Assess

We confirm a reinstall is genuinely the right fix rather than a temporary cover for failing hardware, and run diagnostics if there is any doubt.

02

Preserve

Full image taken, data and configuration captured, installed software inventoried and application activations released where needed.

03

Rebuild

Clean install from official media, vendor drivers and firmware, full patching, then your applications reinstalled from clean sources.

04

Restore and secure

Data and settings returned, encryption enabled with a recoverable key, standard user account, protection installed and a walkthrough at handover.

Not sure if it needs a reinstall?

We diagnose first. If the problem is hardware, wiping it just delays the conversation.

Reinstallation questions

Will I lose my files?

No. We take a full image of the drive before anything is erased and keep it until you confirm everything came across. Documents, photos, mail, browser profiles and application data are restored to the new install, and the image stays available as a safety net.

Do I need my Windows product key?

Usually not. Any OEM machine from roughly the last decade has the key written into UEFI firmware, so a clean install of the same edition activates on its own. Retail and upgraded licenses use a digital entitlement, which is why linking it to a Microsoft account is worth doing before a major hardware change.

How long does it take?

Typically one business day for a standard machine, longer if there is a lot of data to image and restore or if the drive is failing and needs careful handling. Business machines going onto a standard image are usually faster because the software set is already defined.

Why not just let Windows Update install the drivers?

It will get the machine working, but with generic drivers. You typically lose proper fan control, function key behavior, fingerprint readers, docking station features and vendor power management. We pull drivers by service tag in the correct order and finish with the vendor update utility.

Should I reinstall or just buy a new computer?

If the machine is under about five years old, healthy, and the problem is software, a clean install plus an SSD is dramatically cheaper than replacement. If it is older, has a failing drive or is not eligible for a supported operating system, replacement is usually the better spend and we will say so.

Will a reinstall fix my slow computer?

It depends what is causing the slowness. Software clutter, malware remnants and a broken update stack respond very well. Thermal throttling, a dying drive, failing memory or simply insufficient RAM will not, and reinstalling only masks them briefly. We diagnose before recommending.

Can you reinstall macOS too?

Yes. macOS reinstalls come from Apple's own recovery, and on Apple silicon a full erase and restore uses the recovery environment or a DFU restore from a second Mac. We handle Activation Lock, FileVault re-enablement and migration of your data and applications.

Can this be done remotely?

Partly. If the machine still boots we can capture data and stage the work remotely, but the install itself needs someone at the keyboard. For remote clients we often ship a prepared drive or walk a staff member through the boot steps, then take over once Windows is up.
