The Options

SATA, NVMe and what your machine can actually take

The interface decides both the ceiling and the price. Most of the benefit arrives long before the fastest option.

SATA solid state drives are limited by the interface to roughly 550 megabytes per second. That sounds modest next to modern figures, and it is still around five times what a mechanical laptop drive manages sequentially and something like a hundred times better on the random access that actually determines how responsive a computer feels. NVMe drives connect over PCI Express instead, with Gen3 devices reaching around 3,500 megabytes per second and Gen4 around 7,000. The important caveat is that the drive runs at the slower of the drive and the slot, so a Gen4 drive in a Gen3 machine works perfectly and performs at Gen3 speeds.

The traps in fitting one

Not every M.2 slot is an NVMe slot. Machines from the transition years often have an M.2 socket wired only for SATA, and fitting an NVMe drive to it results in a device that is simply not detected. Some boards also share PCIe lanes between the M.2 slot and specific SATA ports, so populating the M.2 disables ports two and three, which is a delightful surprise if you have drives connected to them. On older Intel laptops the installer may not see the NVMe drive at all until the correct storage driver is loaded during setup. Every one of these is trivial if you know about it in advance and infuriating if you do not.

Drive selection matters more than the headline speed. A drive with its own DRAM cache maintains performance far better under sustained load than a DRAM-less design borrowing host memory. TLC flash sustains high write speeds much longer than QLC, which relies on a fast SLC cache that, once exhausted by a large file copy, can drop to speeds a mechanical drive would not be embarrassed by. For a business machine we specify TLC with DRAM and treat the QLC bargain as what it is: fine for storage, poor as a system drive.

Clone or clean install

Cloning copies everything, including the problems. It is the right choice when the existing Windows installation is healthy, the software set is complicated or licensed to the machine, and the user's configuration represents real accumulated time. Done properly it means suspending BitLocker before imaging so the clone boots, matching the partition scheme, expanding the system partition into the new capacity, keeping the recovery partition intact and verifying UEFI boot entries afterwards. Done carelessly it produces a drive that will not boot and an afternoon of recovery work.

A clean install is better when the operating system is several years old and carrying accumulated software debt, when you are moving to a newer Windows version anyway, or when the machine has been misbehaving. It takes longer because applications get reinstalled properly, but the result is a genuinely fresh machine rather than an old one on faster storage. Our clean setup page covers what that involves. For business fleets we frequently do neither and simply deploy the standard image, which is faster than both.

Endurance rarely turns out to be the constraint people expect. Drives are rated in terabytes written, and a typical office machine writes a few tens of gigabytes a day, which puts a decent consumer drive comfortably past a decade of normal use. The workloads that genuinely consume endurance are video editing scratch space, database servers, virtualisation hosts and heavy logging, and for those we specify drives rated accordingly, sometimes with power loss protection. What we do watch is percentage used and available spare in the drive's own telemetry, monitored continuously for Pod Care clients so a worn drive gets replaced on a scheduled visit rather than discovered on a Monday.

For an aging fleet this is the highest-return work available. Take a five-year-old business desktop with a mechanical drive and 8GB of memory: an SSD and a memory upgrade together cost a fraction of a replacement machine and remove the two complaints staff actually make. Boot time, application launch, file search and the general feeling that the machine is arguing with you all improve immediately, because a mechanical drive is the bottleneck in virtually every one of those operations. There is a point where we will tell you not to. If a machine cannot run a supported operating system, if the processor is old enough that it constrains everything regardless of storage, or if a laptop's chassis, hinges and battery are all near the end of their lives, then upgrading is spending good money on a machine you will replace anyway. Will I lose my programs and settings?

Not if we clone. Cloning carries the entire installation across, so the machine boots exactly as it did, with the same applications, licenses and settings. We only recommend a clean install where the existing system is old enough or cluttered enough that carrying it forward is the worse option.

Is NVMe worth it over a SATA SSD?

For most office work the jump from mechanical to any SSD is the transformation, and the difference between SATA and NVMe is far less noticeable. Where large files move constantly, video, engineering datasets or virtual machines, NVMe is genuinely worth the difference.

Can my older laptop take an NVMe drive?

Sometimes. Machines from the transition years often have an M.2 slot wired only for SATA, and an NVMe drive fitted there is simply not detected. We check the specific model's specification before ordering, and a SATA SSD is still a huge improvement over a mechanical drive.

How long do SSDs last?

Longer than most people expect. A typical office machine writes a few tens of gigabytes a day, which puts a quality drive well past a decade of normal use. Heavy write workloads like video editing, databases and virtualisation consume endurance faster, and we specify higher-rated drives for those.

Should I get one big drive or add a second?

On a desktop, keeping a fast system drive and adding bulk storage alongside works well. On a laptop with one slot, a single larger drive is usually the answer. Either way, leave meaningful free space, because a drive kept close to full slows measurably as it loses room to manage writes.

Is a cheap SSD good enough?

For bulk storage, often yes. For a system drive we specify TLC flash with a DRAM cache, because DRAM-less QLC drives fall off badly once their fast cache is exhausted by a large copy. The price gap is small and the difference under real use is not.

What happens to my old hard drive?

We keep it intact until you have confirmed everything came across, then you can keep it as a backup, have us wipe it to a recognized standard, or send it for certified destruction. We never dispose of a drive with data on it without telling you exactly what was done.

Can you upgrade a whole office at once?

Yes, and it is one of the most cost-effective projects a business can run. We schedule by department, work outside business hours where useful, and standardize the drive model so future spares and replacements stay simple.
