The software decides the machine

Nearly every bad workstation purchase comes from buying a general-purpose specification for a specialized job.

Different professional applications reward completely different hardware, and buying more of the wrong thing is the most common expensive mistake we see. Parametric CAD and much engineering software remains substantially single-threaded in its interactive work, so a processor with high clock speed on a few cores beats a many-core chip that looks better on paper. Simulation, rendering and compilation are the opposite and scale with core count. Video editing wants cores and memory bandwidth, plus enough fast storage for the media and a separate scratch location. Photography and design want color-accurate displays and generous memory more than raw compute. We ask which applications and which file sizes before recommending anything, because those two answers determine most of the build.

Engineering, CAD and creative builds

For CAD and engineering we look at whether the vendor certifies specific professional graphics cards and drivers for the software you run. Where certification genuinely matters, and for some packages and some support agreements it does, a professional card with certified drivers avoids a category of viewport artifacts and crashes that are miserable to chase. Where it does not, a consumer card delivers far more performance per dollar. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in rather than defaulting to the expensive answer. Large assemblies also want memory: 32GB is a working minimum and 64GB removes the pauses.

Video builds are structured around storage tiers. A fast NVMe system drive, a separate high-endurance NVMe for cache and scratch, and bulk storage for finished projects, with the archive living somewhere backed up rather than on the workstation. Memory scales with timeline complexity and resolution, and the graphics card matters both for effects acceleration and for hardware encode and decode of the codecs you actually shoot in. Getting the codec question right at specification time saves hours of export time every week.

Quiet office builds and gaming machines

A quiet office machine is a real engineering goal, not a nicety, particularly in a reception area, a consulting room or a small shared office. It comes from lower-power components generating less heat to move, large slow-turning fans instead of small fast ones, a case with sensible airflow rather than restrictive front panels, sound-absorbing panels where appropriate, and above all a properly tuned fan curve so the machine is not ramping up and down all day. Solid state storage throughout removes the last mechanical noise source. The result is a machine you genuinely stop noticing.

Gaming builds get the same discipline applied to different targets: matching the graphics card to the monitor's resolution and refresh rate rather than overbuying for a display that cannot show the difference, ensuring the processor does not bottleneck the card at that resolution, and building cooling that keeps clocks sustained during long sessions instead of impressive for the first five minutes. Some components are worth spending on because you keep them across multiple machines. A quality power supply with a long warranty will typically serve two or three builds, and it protects everything downstream from the voltage instability that cheap units produce under load. A well-made case with proper airflow, tool-free drive mounting and enough clearance for a full-height cooler is a decade-long purchase. Good monitors outlive the computer attached to them by years. Cooling, if properly specified, moves forward too. These are the parts where the cheap option costs more over time, and they are almost always the parts trimmed from a budget build.

Warranty deserves a straight explanation, because it is the honest trade-off against buying a major-brand prebuilt. A prebuilt gives you one vendor, one support number and typically a one to three year system warranty, which for a business that values simplicity has real worth. A custom build gives you individual manufacturer warranties on each component, often ten years on a good power supply, five on a solid state drive subject to its endurance rating, three on a graphics card, which is frequently longer coverage in total but spread across several vendors. Our answer is to handle it: we keep the build sheet with every part, serial number and warranty date, and when something fails we identify it, handle the return process and get the machine back to you. You do not deal with five manufacturers.

Is a custom build cheaper than buying a prebuilt?

Sometimes, but that is not the main reason to do it. The value is in getting the right components for a specialized workload and better parts in the places that matter. For thirty identical office machines with a single onsite warranty, a business-line prebuilt is usually the smarter buy and we will say so.

Do I need a professional graphics card for CAD?

It depends on your software and your support agreement. Some vendors certify specific professional cards and drivers, and where that certification matters it prevents a class of viewport and stability problems. Where it does not, a consumer card gives considerably more performance for the money.

How is the warranty handled on a custom build?

Each component carries its own manufacturer warranty, often longer than a system warranty: commonly ten years on a quality power supply, five on a solid state drive and three on a graphics card. We keep the full build sheet with serial numbers and handle any return process on your behalf.

Can you build a genuinely quiet computer?

Yes, and it is mostly about heat rather than fans. Lower-power components, large slow-turning fans, a case with real airflow, solid state storage throughout and a properly tuned fan curve produce a machine that stays quiet under normal work rather than one that ramps constantly.

How much memory should a video editing machine have?

Thirty-two gigabytes is a working floor, and 64GB is where complex timelines and high resolutions stop causing pauses. Storage layout matters just as much: a fast system drive, separate high-endurance storage for cache and scratch, and bulk capacity for projects.

Which parts are worth spending extra on?

The power supply, the case and the cooling, because they outlast the build and protect what is inside it. A good supply commonly serves two or three machines. Cheap supplies cause instability that gets blamed on other components for months before anyone tests them.

Can you build servers as well as workstations?

Yes, for small businesses where an appropriately specified machine makes sense. That means ECC memory, redundant storage, out-of-band management and a chassis suited to the room it will live in. For larger or more critical workloads we will discuss vendor servers with onsite support.

How long does a build take?

Typically a few business days once the specification is agreed and parts are in hand. We do not rush the testing stage, since a machine that runs a sustained thermal and memory validation before delivery is a machine that does not come back.
