What You Have
The Thomson name on a notebook is a licensed badge, and understanding that explains almost every support problem these machines create.
Thomson-branded computers, including the Neo range, are built on generic designs from contract manufacturers and sold under a licensed brand. The hardware inside is common across many similarly priced machines from different names. That is not a criticism in itself, plenty of good products are built this way, but it has three practical consequences that matter when something goes wrong. There is no deep manufacturer service network in the United States. Parts are identified by component rather than by the badge on the lid. And the driver package exists in exactly one place, on the vendor's support site, with no fallback if that page disappears.
Specifications in this class are consistent: a low-power processor from the entry-level range, four gigabytes of memory soldered to the board, and sixty-four or one hundred and twenty-eight gigabytes of embedded flash storage rather than a real drive. None of the three can be upgraded on most models. Some variants add an internal expansion slot for a small solid state drive, and where that exists it is genuinely worth using, because moving Windows onto a proper drive transforms how the machine feels. We check for it as part of the diagnosis.
This is the conversation nobody enjoys but everyone needs. The entry-level processors used in these notebooks are generally not on Microsoft's supported list for Windows 11, which means the machines are stuck on Windows 10. Windows 10 stopped receiving mainstream security updates in October 2025. A machine on an unpatched operating system, used for email and banking, is a genuine risk rather than a theoretical one.
There are three honest options. Keep the machine but restrict it, so it is used for browsing and streaming and never for banking, work email or anything that matters. Move it to a lightweight alternative operating system, which suits these machines well and gives them years of useful life as a browsing and documents device. Or retire it and move the data to something supported. We will walk you through all three without pushing you toward the one that earns us the most, and our Windows support page covers the wider fleet version of this decision.
Our migration process is deliberate. We inventory what is actually on the machine, including the things people forget, such as browser bookmarks and saved passwords, email stored locally rather than on a server, photos in a folder nobody backs up, and licence keys for software that was bought once and never registered anywhere. Then we move it to the new machine or to cloud storage, verify it opens, and set up sync so the next machine failure is an inconvenience rather than a loss. If a drive or board has already failed, our data recovery team will assess it and give you a cost before any work starts. And if the notebook is being retired, we erase or destroy the storage and recycle the hardware responsibly.
Before any reinstall on white-label hardware, we export the full driver set from the working system. It is the single most useful two minutes in the whole job and it prevents a laptop that comes back with no wireless.

That is the white-label driver problem. The hardware reports itself as generic components, so Windows cannot identify what to install, and the correct drivers only exist on the vendor's own support page. We identify the components from their hardware identifiers and install the right package, then export the full set so it never happens again.

Rarely, and we will show you the numbers rather than just quoting a price. A display assembly plus fitting on a machine at this price point tends to approach what the notebook is worth. Charge ports, batteries and chargers are a different story and are usually worth doing.
