iMac Repair
Most slow iMacs are not old, they are running a failing hard drive inside a machine that is otherwise perfectly capable. We open glued panels properly, replace what has actually failed, and reseal the display with fresh adhesive so it looks untouched. Where the economics do not work, we say so first.
Inside The Machine
From late 2012 onward Apple stopped using magnets and started using adhesive. That one change defines what an iMac repair costs.
On a 2009 to mid-2011 iMac the front glass lifts off with suction cups because it is held by magnets. Everything behind it is reachable in minutes. From the slim 2012 redesign forward, the glass and LCD are laminated into a single assembly and bonded to the chassis with a double-sided adhesive strip running the entire perimeter. Opening it means running a thin cutting wheel around the seam at exactly the right depth, lifting the panel without stressing the display cables underneath, and applying a fresh factory adhesive kit on reassembly. Done well it is invisible. If a drive has already failed before it reaches us, our data recovery team takes over from there. Done badly you get a lifted corner, dust between the layers, or a nicked backlight sheet that shows as a bright line forever.
A Fusion Drive is not a hybrid disk. It is a small SSD, either 24GB, 32GB or 128GB depending on the model, joined to a 1TB or 3TB mechanical drive as a single logical volume. macOS keeps hot data on the flash and cold data on the platters. It works well right up until either half dies, and then the whole volume goes with it. Customers regularly tell us the Mac was fine yesterday, because the flash half was still serving the boot files while the mechanical half had already started failing.
Our approach is the same every time. Image the mechanical drive first, while it still reads, then rebuild the machine on a single SATA or blade SSD and restore. On a 2017 27-inch that turns a four-minute startup into a twenty-second one. It is the best value repair in the entire Apple desktop lineup and we do a lot of them. The 2011 27-inch iMac with the AMD Radeon HD 6970M or 6770M is the classic case. Symptoms start as colored artifacts, checkerboarding on wake, or a garbled Apple logo at boot, then progress to a black screen with the machine still chiming. This is solder fatigue in the graphics package, and the honest answer is that oven reflows and heat-gun jobs are not repairs. They buy weeks, not years.
Finally, the 5K conversation. A cracked or failed Retina 5K panel on a 2014 to 2020 27-inch iMac is the most expensive single part in the entire Mac desktop line. On an older unit the panel alone can cost more than a clean used replacement machine. We will always price it, and we will always tell you when the math says walk away. If the panel is fine but the internals have failed, the opposite is usually true and the repair is easily worth doing.
Apple sells VESA-mount iMacs as separate models with a different rear housing. The stand on a standard iMac is not designed to be swapped for a VESA adapter after purchase on most generations, so decide on the mount at purchase time rather than after.

Our Method
Six things we do on every internal iMac job that separate a proper repair from a rushed one.
If the drive still reads, we copy it first. Recovery odds fall every time a failing drive is spun up again.
Too shallow and the adhesive tears the foam; too deep and you meet the display cables or the antenna.
We never reuse strips. A properly resealed iMac has no dust ingress and no lifting corner.
Drive temperature sensing is addressed so the fans behave normally after a storage swap.
Thermal compound on any machine older than five years is dry. We replace it while the panel is off.
Thermal soak, drive verification and a display uniformity check before it goes back to you.
Almost certainly not. A 2015 iMac with a quad-core processor and 8GB of memory is still capable for office work, and the bottleneck is nearly always the mechanical hard drive inside it. Moving it to an SSD is a transformation, and it costs a fraction of a replacement machine.
Yes, and we price it before you commit. On non-Retina models the panel is often affordable. On a Retina 5K 27-inch the panel is the most expensive single part in the desktop Mac range, and on older units it can exceed the machine's market value. You get that number up front.
It is a small SSD and a mechanical hard drive presented as one volume by macOS. Because data is spread across both, a failure in either half takes the volume down. Mechanical drives are the usual culprit and they normally give warning signs, so the moment your iMac starts stalling is the moment to have it imaged.
On the 27-inch models from 2012 to 2020 there is a memory door behind the power port and it is genuinely a five-minute job. On 21.5-inch models the memory is either soldered or only reachable by removing the display, so it is bench work. Apple silicon iMacs use unified memory and cannot be upgraded at all.
That is the drive temperature sensor. The iMac expects a signal from the original drive, and without it the firmware assumes the worst and drives the fans to maximum. We fit the correct sensor cable or configure a proper fan control profile to resolve it permanently.
