Sticky keys, swollen batteries, spilled coffee

First, the butterfly keyboard. Every MacBook and MacBook Air built between 2015 and 2019 used a low-travel butterfly mechanism that is intolerant of dust. A single crumb under a key causes a letter that repeats, a letter that does nothing, or a space bar that feels dead on one side. Apple ran a service program for these keyboards for several years, but that coverage has now expired across the lineup. The mechanical problem is that the keyboard is riveted into the top case. A proper repair therefore means replacing the whole top-case assembly, which includes the keyboard, the trackpad, the battery and the chassis. It is the single most expensive routine repair in the MacBook world, and on older units it can exceed the machine's value. We price it before we touch anything.

Second, batteries. A MacBook battery that has swollen will lift the trackpad first, then bow the bottom case, and eventually the lid will no longer sit flush. This is not cosmetic. A swollen lithium cell is a fire risk and the machine should be taken out of service immediately, kept off charge and away from a bag. In Retina Airs the cells are bonded to the case with adhesive, and removal means careful use of solvent and release technique rather than prying. Later Apple designs added pull tabs, which makes the job cleaner and quicker. Our battery replacement service covers every model we work on.

Liquid damage: the hours matter

The hours after a spill decide the outcome, so the machine goes straight onto a bench rather than into a bag of rice. Our process is a full teardown, battery disconnect, ultrasonic cleaning of the logic board where corrosion has started, and then a rail-by-rail check of the power delivery. Sugary drinks and cleaning sprays are worse than plain water because they leave conductive residue that keeps corroding for weeks. Often the board survives and the casualty is the keyboard, trackpad flex or audio board, which are far cheaper to address. Sometimes the board is gone, and the job becomes getting your files out, which on pre-2018 models is usually straightforward and on later ones is a job for our data recovery team. Thermals and M-series serviceability

The M1 MacBook Air has no fan at all. It is silent and superb for normal work, but sustained exports and long compiles will throttle it, and that is design rather than fault. Intel Airs from 2018 and 2019 had the opposite problem: a fan that barely engaged with the heat path, producing a machine that got hot and slow under very modest load. There are thermal improvements we can make on those, and they are worth doing before you write the machine off.

On current Apple silicon Airs the picture is better than people assume for mechanical work and worse for storage. Batteries, ports, speakers, displays and top cases are all serviceable. The flash storage, however, is soldered and encrypted to the logic board, so a board failure means data recovery becomes a board repair problem. Back up. Then back up somewhere else too.
