Battery swelling is the Blade fault to know about

If one thing brings a Razer Blade to our bench more than any other, it is a lithium pack that has expanded inside a chassis with almost no room to spare.

The Blade packs a large battery into a very thin CNC-milled aluminium body. When cells age, and heavy gaming plus heat ages them faster, they can expand. In a thicker plastic laptop that goes unnoticed for a while. In a Blade the first sign is usually the trackpad: it starts sitting slightly proud of the surrounding metal, clicks unevenly, or stops registering clicks at the bottom edge. Sometimes the base panel bows enough that the laptop rocks on a flat desk.

Treat it as urgent

A swollen pack is a fire risk and it is also mechanically destructive. Left in place it deforms the unibody, cracks the trackpad glass and eventually stresses the display assembly when the lid no longer closes flush. Every week it stays in the machine, the repair gets more expensive. Stop charging it, power the machine down and bring it in.

We remove swollen packs carefully, replace them with correctly specified cells and dispose of the old pack properly rather than putting it in the trash. Unibody chassis and the disassembly reality

The Blade’s CNC aluminium construction is genuinely superb and genuinely unforgiving. The base panel uses small Torx screws that strip easily under the wrong driver, and the panel itself flexes very little, so it does not tolerate being pried at the wrong point. Drops that a plastic laptop would absorb instead put a permanent dent or bend into the case, and a bent base can prevent the panel sitting flat again.

That construction also means there is no cheap route around a damaged chassis component. Where a machine has taken a fall, we assess the frame properly before quoting so you know whether you are looking at a straightforward internal repair or a case problem that will keep causing issues.

Thermals, Synapse and soldered parts

Blade cooling uses vapour chamber assemblies in a chassis with very little air volume, so it depends entirely on being clean. Dust here in the East Valley reduces it faster than most owners expect. A full service, fin stack cleaning, new compound and correctly specified pads, is the highest-value regular maintenance for a Blade, and we measure sustained clocks before and after.

Razer Synapse handles Chroma lighting, performance modes and fan curves. A corrupt install causes lighting to freeze, custom fan curves to stop applying and the machine to sit in a lower power mode than you selected. Clean reinstall first. On the hardware side, be aware that Blade 14 models solder all memory to the board, so there is no memory upgrade path there. Blade 15 and 16 configurations vary. Storage is expandable on essentially all of them, and an NVMe upgrade remains the best value change.

The one thing we will not do is soften the screen conversation. Blade display assemblies use bonded high-refresh panels, and on the Blade 16 mini-LED configurations the part alone is one of the most expensive laptop screens on the market. On an older Blade with a cracked panel, the honest arithmetic sometimes favours replacement, and we will say so before you have spent anything. Do not keep using a swollen battery

Power it down, unplug it and stop charging. Swollen lithium cells are a genuine fire risk, and every extra week deforms more of a chassis that is expensive to replace.

Razer Blade repair questions

My Razer trackpad is raised and clicks unevenly. What causes that?

A swollen battery underneath it. The Blade has very little internal clearance, so an expanding pack pushes directly against the trackpad. Stop charging the machine and bring it in. This is time-sensitive because the swelling continues and eventually deforms the chassis and cracks the glass.

Is a swollen laptop battery actually dangerous?

Yes. Swelling means the cell chemistry has broken down and is producing gas, and damaged lithium cells can vent or catch fire. It is also mechanically destructive inside a thin chassis. Do not puncture it, do not keep charging it, and do not put it in household waste when it is removed.

Why is a Razer Blade screen so expensive to replace?

Blade displays are bonded high-refresh assemblies, and the Blade 16 mini-LED options are among the most expensive laptop panels made. There is no economical aftermarket equivalent that matches the specification. We always quote the exact part before ordering so you can weigh it against the machine's value.

Can I upgrade the RAM in my Razer Blade?

On the Blade 14, no, because all memory is soldered to the board. On Blade 15 and 16 it depends on the generation and configuration. Storage is upgradeable on essentially every Blade, and adding NVMe capacity is usually the change that makes the most practical difference.

My Blade gets hot and loud very quickly. Is that normal?

Some heat is inherent to putting this much hardware in a chassis this thin. Rapid onset with reduced performance is not. It usually means the fin stacks are dust-blocked and the thermal compound has degraded. A full service including vapour chamber cleaning and new pads restores the original behaviour.

My Chroma lighting froze and my fan curve stopped working. Hardware or software?

Almost always Synapse. A corrupt install leaves lighting stuck and custom fan and performance profiles unable to apply. A clean removal and current reinstall resolves the large majority of these. If it persists after that, then we look at the hardware side.

I dropped my Blade and now the base does not sit flat. Can that be fixed?

It depends on the deformation. The unibody aluminium construction does not flex back the way plastic does, so a bent base panel or frame corner may need replacing rather than straightening. We assess the frame properly and tell you whether you are looking at an internal repair or a chassis problem.

Should I attempt a Blade teardown myself?

We would advise against it. The base uses small Torx screws that strip under the wrong driver, the panel has very little flex and does not tolerate prying at the wrong point, and the internal cables are short and fragile. A stripped screw on a unibody chassis turns a simple job into an expensive one.
