A MacBook Pro is usually the most expensive tool a professional owns and the one carrying work that exists nowhere else. There is no such thing as a generic MacBook Pro repair. The 2016 to 2019 models fail in very specific, well-documented ways.
Start with the display cable problem widely known as flexgate. On 13-inch and 15-inch models from 2016 and 2017, the flexible cable carrying signal and backlight power from the board to the panel is routed around the hinge and is slightly too short. Every open and close puts tension on it. Eventually the backlight side fails, and the classic symptom appears: an uneven row of bright patches along the bottom of the screen that owners describe as a stage-light effect, followed by the backlight cutting out entirely once the lid passes about forty degrees. Apple lengthened the cable in the 2018 revision. Because the cable is integrated into the display assembly, the manufacturer's repair is a whole assembly replacement. That is what we quote, and we tell you honestly when a machine's value does not support it.
Then thermals. The 2019 16-inch and the higher-specification 15-inch models put a very hot eight-core processor and discrete graphics into a thin chassis. After a few years the factory thermal compound dries and pump-out sets in, and the machine starts spending its life at reduced clock speeds. Owners describe it as the laptop getting slower, when it is really running hot and protecting itself. A proper strip, clean and repaste with quality compound, plus clearing the exhaust fins of the felt-like dust that accumulates in them, restores sustained performance measurably. It is one of the most satisfying repairs we do and one of the cheapest.
Models from 2016 to 2020 carry a Touch Bar with its own display and controller. Failures show up as a dead strip, a strip stuck showing one image, or intermittent flickering, and the cause is often the flex cable rather than the strip itself. The Touch ID sensor is a different matter. It is cryptographically paired to the logic board, so a replacement sensor requires the manufacturer's pairing process to function again. Any shop claiming to swap a Touch ID button as a simple part is not telling you the whole story.
How we get data off a dead Pro depends entirely on the era. On a 2012 to 2015 Retina model the storage is a removable blade and reading it takes minutes. On 2018 and later machines there is no removable drive at all, and the encryption keys live in the Secure Enclave on that specific board. If the board can be brought back to life, even briefly, we pull data using target disk mode on Intel or Mac sharing mode on Apple silicon. If it cannot, recovery becomes micro-soldering work that our data recovery team assesses case by case. Two backups, one of them offsite, is the only real answer, and it is part of what our Mac support service keeps running for teams.
On 2016 to 2019 models the battery is bonded into the top case, so replacement often means the whole assembly. From the 2021 14-inch and 16-inch onward Apple returned to a pull-tab design that allows the battery to be replaced on its own. That difference matters a great deal to the quote.

That is the classic early sign of the display flex cable failing on 2016 and 2017 models. It usually progresses to the backlight cutting out completely once the lid opens past roughly forty degrees. Because the cable is part of the display assembly, the repair is an assembly replacement, and we will price it against the machine's value first.
Check the thermals. On 15-inch and 16-inch Intel models the factory compound dries out over a few years and the machine quietly runs at reduced clock speeds to stay cool. Nothing reports a fault because nothing is faulty, it is protecting itself. A repaste and fin clean typically restores the performance you remember.
It depends on the year. On 2016 to 2019 models the cells are bonded into the top case and the reliable repair is usually the complete assembly. From the 2021 14-inch and 16-inch onward the battery uses pull tabs and can be replaced on its own, which is far less expensive.
Not always. A surprising number of Touch Bar failures are the flex cable rather than the strip itself, and that is a much cheaper repair. We test the cable before quoting anything. If the Touch ID sensor is also involved, that part is paired to the logic board and has different constraints.
Possibly, and the model year decides how. On 2015 and earlier Retina models the storage is a removable blade we can read directly. On 2018 and later the flash is soldered and encrypted to that board, so we either revive the board long enough to extract data or move to board-level recovery. We assess before quoting.
That is usually the dock, the cable or the power budget rather than the laptop. Driving two displays while charging demands real power delivery, and many cables sold as Thunderbolt are only capable of much less. We test the whole chain and usually find the answer outside the machine.
