The Blade 16 is thin for what it contains, and that is the whole engineering story. Every component in the cooling path is doing more work than its size suggests.

Inside a Blade 16 the cooling is a stack rather than a simple heatsink: a large flat cold plate over the processor and graphics chip, a spreader carrying that heat out to fin banks at the rear and sides, and thermal pads bridging the graphics memory and the power stages into the same assembly. It is well engineered and it has almost no slack in it. Every part of that stack has to be in good condition for the machine to hold its clocks.

Why paste and pads matter more here

On a thick laptop, tired thermal compound costs a few degrees and the cooling system absorbs it. On a Blade 16 there is no margin to absorb anything. Compound that has dried out, or a pad that has hardened and lost contact, moves the machine from holding its clocks under load to dropping them within minutes. Owners describe this as the machine getting slower in games over the years, which is exactly what is happening.

A correct service replaces both, using pads of the thickness the design specifies rather than whatever is at hand. Too thin and the component loses contact, too thick and the cold plate sits proud of the chips it is meant to touch. Storage is the reliable win. This size of chassis usually has more than one drive position, so capacity can often be added without disturbing the existing installation. Servicing versus replacing a thin flagship

Most Blade 16 owners are not choosing between repair and replacement. They are deciding whether maintenance is worth paying for. It usually is.

Are the thermal pads really that important, or is that an upsell?

They are important, and the wrong ones actively cause harm. Graphics memory and the power stages dump heat through pads of a specified thickness. Too thin and the component loses contact with the assembly, too thick and the cold plate no longer sits properly on the processor. Either way the machine comes out worse than it went in.

My laptop lives on a desk. Can it still be full of dust?

Yes, and in this part of Arizona it usually is. Fine dust stays airborne and the base intakes pull it straight into the fins. Desk use is better than carpet or a bed, but it does not prevent it. A year of daily use in a normal home is enough to measurably reduce what the cooling system can move.

Can I add a second drive without reinstalling Windows?
