We repair them with that in mind, and we are straight about what thin construction makes practical and what it does not.

The gram is built around a single goal: a large screen you barely notice carrying. LG gets there with magnesium alloy and by using as little of it as the design allows, and that choice runs through everything we see on the bench.
Magnesium alloy is a good material for this. It is stiff for its weight and it holds a finish well. What it cannot do is behave like a thick aluminium slab, because there is far less of it. A gram resists everyday handling perfectly well, but it has less margin against twisting, point pressure and impact than a heavier machine, and that margin is where most of the damage we repair comes from. This is not a fragile laptop. It is a light one, and the two are easy to confuse.
Pick a gram up by one corner while it is open and you can feel the base move. That is normal for the construction and it is not damaging in itself. What does cause damage is repeated flex under load: carrying it open in one hand, pressing down hard on the palmrest, or lifting it by the lid. Over time that works on the internal fasteners and the bonded joins, and you start seeing creaks, a base that no longer sits perfectly flat, and connectors that intermittently lose contact because the board is being twisted a fraction of a millimetre.
Intermittent faults on a very light machine deserve a physical inspection rather than a software diagnosis. A trackpad that stops responding when the machine sits on your lap but works fine on a desk is a mechanical symptom, not a driver problem. We reproduce it in the position where it happens, which is how those faults are actually found, and it is standard practice in our hardware diagnosis and repair work.
The hinges have to hold a large lid steady with very little structure to anchor into. Over years of opening and closing, the fixings work at their mounting points, and in thin magnesium a stripped or pulled thread is a real possibility rather than a theoretical one. The early symptoms are a lid that wobbles when you type, a hinge tighter on one side, or a small gap opening between the lid and the bezel.
That is the moment to bring it in. Repaired at the wobble stage it is a hinge and mount job. Left running, the lid mount tears further, the display cable in the hinge channel gets worked every time you open the machine, and a contained repair becomes a display repair. The most common display failure we see on this machine involves no drop at all. A large, thin lid carried in a bag alongside a charger or a water bottle takes point pressure, and the panel cracks or develops a spreading dark bloom while the outside of the case is unmarked. What Is Practical
Thin construction does not make a laptop disposable, but it does move the line between a sensible repair and one that is not worth doing.
Batteries, drives, hinges, ports and thermal work are all proper repairs on a gram and they extend its life properly. Where thin construction bites is on anything involving the chassis itself. A base that has been bent, a lid that has been twisted, or mounting points that have pulled out of thin magnesium can sometimes be brought back and sometimes cannot, and no honest technician will tell you which until the machine is open. We assess it, show you what we find, and price the realistic options rather than starting work and delivering bad news later.
The other consideration is that the panel is a large share of the machine’s value. On a gram that has already had significant chassis damage, adding a display assembly frequently pushes the total past what the machine is worth. When that happens we say it plainly and put the numbers side by side. Sometimes the right answer is still to repair, because you know the machine and you like it. That is a legitimate choice, and it should be made with the real figures visible.
Data is separate from all of this and it comes first. Storage on these machines is a removable M.2 drive, which means that even on a laptop with a cracked chassis and a dead board we can normally read your files directly. Nobody loses a document because a hinge failed, and if a replacement machine is where you land, we move everything across before the old one goes anywhere.
