Abit left the motherboard business years ago, so every machine we see is legacy hardware. We still service them, recover the data on them and keep the ones that matter running. We will also tell you plainly when the money belongs in a replacement instead.

Abit was a mainboard manufacturer with a serious following among people who built their own machines. The company left the business, but plenty of what it built is still switched on.
Every Abit board that comes through the workshop is legacy hardware now. That is not a reason to refuse the work. It does change the conversation, because the honest questions are about parts, about the age of everything around the board, and about what the machine is actually being asked to do.
Some of these systems are still earning their keep. A board driving a machine tool, a test rig, a signage PC or a piece of laboratory equipment does not care that its manufacturer stopped shipping. If the software will not move and the hardware is doing its job, keeping it alive is the rational choice, and we are happy to be the ones who do it.
The rest are usually general purpose desktops that have simply been kept a long time. In that case the useful service is often not a board repair at all. Either way you get a straight answer first. We diagnose before we quote, and we do not take on a repair we do not believe in.
Model numbers on legacy boards are easy to misread, and the wrong revision means the wrong part. We confirm the silkscreen and the revision in person before a single component is sourced.
Common Abit Work

Bulging or vented capacitors around the voltage regulation stage are the classic fault on boards of this era. Symptoms are instability under load, failure to post, or a machine that only starts once it has warmed up. Where the board is worth saving and the pads are sound, recapping is a real repair rather than a gamble.
We work through it properly: power supply under load, memory in isolation, the graphics path, the CMOS battery and the board itself. On hardware this old the power supply is at least as likely as the board, and it is a far cheaper thing to be right about.
Mechanical drives from this period are living on borrowed time. If a drive is still readable we image it first and work from the copy, because the second attempt at a failing drive is always worse than the first.
Two decades of Arizona dust in a fin stack is not unusual on these. Clearing it, replacing seized fans and renewing dried thermal compound frequently fixes a shutdown problem people assumed was terminal.
A dead coin cell loses the settings on every power cut. It is a trivial part, and on a legacy board it is worth checking before anyone concludes the machine has a serious fault.
When a board genuinely cannot be revived, the value in the machine is the data. We remove the drive, image it and hand it back to you on modern storage, or migrate it into a replacement machine so nothing is left behind.

For a system tied to equipment or software that will not move, the sensible plan is a full clean, a fresh power supply, an imaged backup of the drive and a documented spare. That turns a fragile machine into a managed one.
When the board is beyond sensible repair, or the cost lands anywhere near the value of a modern replacement, we recover everything and set up the new machine so the transition costs you a morning rather than a week.

Parts and Expectations
The limiting factor on legacy repair is almost never skill. It is supply.
New old stock, pulls from donor boards and salvaged components are what the market offers for hardware this old, and availability changes week to week. We tell you what we can source and what the lead time looks like before you commit, rather than accepting the job and going quiet.
We also will not quote a turnaround we cannot control. If a part has to come from a specialist supplier we say so up front. If it does not exist at all, we say that too, and we move to the recovery and migration conversation instead of stringing the repair out.

For the common failure points, often yes. Capacitors, fans, power supplies, storage and coin cells are all generic or still made. What is genuinely difficult is a board-specific component or a replacement board of the same revision, because those only come from donor hardware. We check availability before quoting rather than after.
That is the case where legacy repair makes the most sense, and we see it regularly with machine tools, test rigs and laboratory instruments. The approach is to service it properly, image the drive so the software state is preserved, and where possible put a documented spare on the shelf so a failure is an inconvenience rather than a shutdown.
You usually do not from the symptoms alone, which is why we test rather than guess. A tired power supply and a failing board produce very similar behaviour: random restarts, failure to post, instability under load. The power supply is cheaper and more likely, so it gets ruled out first.
In most cases yes. If the drive itself is healthy the files come off straightforwardly once it is out of the machine. If the drive is failing we image it first and work from that copy. We will tell you honestly what the chances are once we have looked at it.
Often, and we will say so. If the machine is a general purpose desktop with no special dependency, the money is nearly always better spent on a supported replacement than on keeping hardware of this age alive. If something ties you to it, that changes the answer, and we work with whichever way it falls.
Hardware repair is quoted after a diagnostic, because the same symptom on a legacy machine can have very different causes and costs. You get the finding and the number before any work starts, and you are free to decline.
