A Tecra is bought to sit on a desk, take a dock, and last several years without drama. When one stops behaving, the fault is usually mundane and the machine is usually worth fixing. We diagnose it, quote it, and get it back into the rotation rather than talking you into a replacement.

Tecra is the workhorse end of the line. Thicker than the ultraportables, cheaper to keep alive, and built with the assumption that somebody would eventually take the bottom cover off.
The practical difference between a business chassis and a consumer one shows up the first time you service it. Fasteners are captive rather than glued. The keyboard is usually a discrete part instead of being riveted into the top case. Memory is frequently socketed on at least one channel. Storage is accessible without dismantling the whole machine. Every one of those choices lowers the cost of a repair three years in, which is the entire argument for buying business hardware in the first place.
Most Tecra service calls that start with “the laptop is broken” end at the dock. A monitor that goes black under load, a keyboard that stops responding after a wake, a network connection that only exists when the machine is undocked: these are dock, cable and firmware symptoms far more often than they are laptop faults. We test the machine bare, then reintroduce the dock and the peripherals one at a time until the fault reappears.
The other frequent culprit is mismatched power. A dock that is not delivering enough power will charge slowly, or run the machine down while it appears to be charging. We measure what is actually being delivered instead of reading the icon, then tell you whether the dock, the supply or the machine needs replacing.
Keyboard failures are the most common single repair on any business laptop, and this is where a Tecra earns its keep. On most of the line the keyboard is a serviceable part, so a handful of dead keys or a coffee incident does not turn into a full top-case replacement. We handle laptop keyboard replacement and we check underneath as well, because liquid that reached the board does its real damage over the following weeks.
If a spill has happened, powering the machine back on to see if it still works is the single worst thing you can do. Hold the power button until it stops, leave it off, and bring it in. Corrosion is a chemical process and it does not stop just because the screen still lights up.
Older Tecra units used a 2.5-inch drive bay, newer ones use M.2, and plenty of them have a spare memory socket that was never filled. That means a machine that feels slow is often not finished. Before anyone buys new hardware we check whether an RAM upgrade and a solid state drive would get another two useful years out of it. Frequently they will.
For fleets, the work worth doing is standardisation: the same firmware revision, the same driver baseline, the same disk image and the same security settings on every unit. It removes the class of fault where one machine misbehaves for reasons nobody can reproduce. That is ordinary practice in our managed IT services work and it costs far less than chasing individual mysteries.
The one thing we will not do is pretend a Tecra is immortal. Availability for the older chassis is thinning, particularly for panels and lid assemblies, and a machine that cannot meet current Windows requirements is on a clock regardless of how well it runs. We keep that in front of you when we quote, alongside everything else on our Dynabook repair bench, so hardware replacement is something you plan rather than something that happens to you on a Monday morning.
If the machine spends its life docked, the dock is part of the diagnosis. Bringing both means we can reproduce the fault instead of testing a machine that behaves perfectly on our bench.

Business machines fail predictably, which is one of the reasons they are cheaper to own.
Dead keys, sticking keys, spills and worn legends. A discrete part on most Tecra chassis, which keeps the repair proportionate to the machine.
Dropped monitors, dead network ports and charge faults that only appear when docked. We isolate the laptop, the dock and the cables separately.
Loose jacks, cracked solder joints and charging that stops when the cable moves. Repaired at board level rather than by replacing the machine.
Filling the empty socket and moving to solid state. The two changes that most reliably extend the working life of a business laptop.
Cracked screens, backlight failure and flicker traced to a display cable worn where it passes through the hinge channel.
Verified against cycle count and current capacity rather than the warning message, with a written condition note for fleet planning.
One firmware revision, one driver set and one image across the fleet, so machines behave the same way and faults become reproducible.

Lifecycle
Business hardware earns its money in years four and five. The trick is knowing which machines will make it there and which ones are quietly costing you more than they save.
The keep-or-retire test we use is simple. Does the machine meet current operating system requirements? Is the chassis intact, particularly the hinges and the lid? Are memory and storage at a level that matches the work being done on it? If those three answers are yes, then a keyboard, a battery, a drive or a jack is a sensible spend and the machine has real life left. If the first answer is no, further investment is throwing good money after bad and we will say so before the parts are ordered.
Retirement should be planned, not triggered by a failure. When a Tecra comes to us we note storage health, battery condition and chassis state, so the machines nearest the end of their life are visible on a list rather than discovered when somebody cannot work. Replacing three machines on a schedule is always cheaper and calmer than replacing one in a panic on a deadline day.
When a unit does leave the fleet, the data is the part that matters. We move profiles, documents and application settings across to the new machine, then wipe the retired drive properly so the hardware can be sold, donated or recycled without leaving your business data on somebody else’s desk. Nothing goes out of the door until the new machine is confirmed working.
We find out by elimination rather than by guessing. The laptop is tested on a direct display connection, then on the dock with one monitor, then with the full setup. Most of the time the answer is a cable, a dock firmware level or a display negotiation setting rather than the laptop, which means the fix is cheap.
Usually not. On most of the line the keyboard is a discrete serviceable part, so it is a straightforward swap rather than a full top-case replacement. That is one of the practical reasons business laptops cost less to own over five years than consumer models with riveted keyboards.
Yes, and sooner is much better. Liquid that reached the board starts corroding traces immediately, and the failure often arrives days or weeks later when the damage is no longer confined to the keyboard. Turn it off, leave it off, and let us clean it before the corrosion spreads.
Often, yes. Many were bought with one memory socket empty and a mechanical hard drive fitted. Filling the socket and moving to solid state transforms the machine for a fraction of replacement cost. We check the current operating system requirements first, because there is no point upgrading hardware that cannot run supported software.
Yes. We can collect a batch, service them together, return them with matching firmware and driver levels, and provide a condition list covering storage and battery health. Doing them as a group is faster for us and less disruptive for you than one machine at a time.
We migrate profiles, documents and application settings to the replacement, confirm the new machine is working, and only then wipe the old drive properly. That way the retired hardware can be recycled or resold without carrying your business data with it.
