Strix gives up a few millimetres of thickness and gets back airflow, sockets and access. On the bench that difference is enormous.
A thicker chassis means larger fin stacks, longer heat pipes and fans that can move real air without running at their limit. It also means components sit where a technician can reach them. Many Strix builds carry sockets for memory and more than one drive slot, so upgrades that are impossible elsewhere in the ASUS range are routine here. When someone asks which gaming laptop ages best from a repair point of view, this is the shape of the answer.
This is the single most misunderstood thing about repairing a Strix. The display assembly is specified per build, and panels sold under the same model name can differ in refresh rate, response and the cable they expect. Fitting whatever panel physically bolts in produces a machine that works but no longer runs at the refresh rate you paid for, which on a gaming laptop is the entire point.
We identify the panel your unit actually shipped with from the product code, then match it. If the exact assembly is not available we tell you what the alternatives give up before you approve anything, rather than after. That is also why we test the cable first, since flicker and dropouts are frequently a worn cable at the hinge rather than a failed panel, and a screen replacement is the more expensive of the two by a wide margin.
The graphics processor and its memory are soldered to the mainboard on every laptop in this class, so there is no card to swap. What we can do is establish whether the fault is really the graphics hardware. Artefacts on both internal and external displays, failure to initialise, or crashes that survive a clean driver reinstall point at the board. Problems that appear only on the internal panel usually do not.
That distinction is worth real money, because a panel or cable repair is affordable and a mainboard is not. We work through it methodically with external displays and driver-level testing before anyone is quoted for a board. When a board has genuinely failed, we give you the repair number and a realistic replacement number side by side.
Per-key lighting is standard territory on this line and it complicates spills. Liquid that would simply kill a membrane keyboard elsewhere can take the lighting controller with it here, and the symptom is often a working keyboard with dead or stuck-on zones. We assess whether the fault is the keyboard assembly, the controller or corrosion spreading on the board underneath.
The Scar variants sit at the top of the line and carry the more elaborate lighting and trim, which means more parts in the top case and more care on reassembly. None of that is difficult, but it is why we quote Scar work on its own terms rather than treating the whole family as one price.

Keeping One Long Term
Access and sockets change the arithmetic in the owner's favour for years longer than most gaming laptops manage.
Almost everything except a mainboard is worth doing on this line. Cooling service restores sustained performance, an NVMe upgrade ends the constant juggling of installs, and where sockets exist a memory increase keeps the machine relevant well past the point a soldered laptop would have been retired. We regularly service units several years old for owners in Chandler and Gilbert who have no interest in replacing something that still performs.
The exceptions are honest ones. A failed mainboard, or a premium display assembly on a machine that has already taken structural damage, can approach replacement cost. When that happens we present both figures plainly and we are content for you to spend the money elsewhere. We would rather lose a job than sell a repair that does not make sense on paper.
Data handling on gaming machines gets treated the same as any other. We image the drive before invasive work wherever it can be read, and we flag when a second drive is holding recordings or project files that nobody has backed up. If storage has failed rather than the machine, that is a separate data recovery assessment with its own quote and your explicit approval.

Bring it in unpowered and do not try to dry it out with heat. On this line the lighting controller often takes damage alongside the keyboard, and corrosion continues spreading on the board while the machine sits. Assessed early the odds are reasonable. Assessed a fortnight later they usually are not.
That is storage rather than performance, and it is the cheapest fix on this page. A larger, faster NVMe drive with the installation cloned across changes the machine completely. While it is open we would also check the cooling, since an older unit is usually overdue a fin clean and fresh compound.
