A ProBook is bought because it costs less than an EliteBook and still comes with commercial firmware, a documented service manual and parts you can actually buy. What it gives up is finish and options, not repairability. That is exactly the right trade for a machine that will spend its life on a desk, in a bag and occasionally under a coffee cup. When one arrives at our bench it is usually because something physical happened to it rather than because anything exotic went wrong.
Liquid is the number one ProBook fault we see. Most models use a discrete keyboard rather than a riveted top case, so a spill caught early is often a keyboard and a clean rather than a rebuild. What matters is what the owner does in the first hour: power off, unplug, do not stand it up to drain into the board, and bring it in. Machines that get switched on repeatedly to see if they still work are the ones that end up with corroded tracks.
Hinge and lid damage from bag transport is the other regular. ProBook lids are not as stiff as the EliteBook equivalents, so a laptop carried in a full bag can arrive with a display cable pinched at the hinge or a cracked bezel corner. The keyboard replacement and panel work on these is straightforward once the correct part is identified.
The real cost of a small-office fleet is not repairs. It is variation. Ten ProBooks bought together drift into ten different states, and every difference is a support call waiting to happen. Batteries, fans, wireless cards, drives and keyboards remain obtainable for years, and the labour to fit them is predictable because HP documents the strip-down. That is why an office of four-year-old ProBooks is often better served by a round of batteries and drives than by a purchase order, and it is a normal conversation on our HP repair bench.

Fleet Economics
Replacing every laptop at once is expensive and disruptive. Replacing none of them is worse.
The pattern we see in small offices is a batch of ProBooks bought together, ignored for four years, and then all becoming a problem in the same quarter. The way out is staging. Machines with failing batteries and full drives get serviced, machines with dead boards or unsupported processors get replaced, and the rest are scheduled for a specific quarter based on their recorded condition rather than on complaints.
That means an honest assessment first. We check storage wear, battery capacity, memory headroom and whether the processor supports a current version of Windows, and we hand back a list. Some of those machines will be worth a drive and a battery. Some will not be worth touching. We tell you which is which, including the ones where the answer costs us the repair work.
When machines do get replaced, the changeover is the part that disrupts people, not the hardware. We set up the new units with the same applications and settings, move the data across, and keep the old machine intact until the user confirms nothing is missing.
