A Surface Pro is a full Windows PC packed behind a glass display. That makes it a lovely thing to carry and an awkward thing to open. We know which generations come apart safely, which do not, and when the sensible answer is to move your data and move on.
Surface Pro Repair
There is no bottom cover to unscrew and no keyboard to lift off. On a Surface Pro the display is the lid, the case and the access panel all at once, and that single fact sets the price of nearly every repair.
The Surface Pro is a tablet that runs the same Windows as a desktop, with the keyboard sold as a separate cover. To fit a processor, a fan or vapour chamber, a battery and a mainboard into something that thin, Microsoft bonds the display assembly to the chassis around the full perimeter. Getting inside means controlled heat, thin picks and a steady hand, and the glass is under stress for the whole procedure. On the earlier generations that is genuinely risky work. On the recent generations there is an access door for the storage and a published service procedure, which changes the job completely.
Lithium cells expand as they age. In a laptop that expansion lifts a trackpad. In a tablet there is nowhere for it to go except outward into the display. The early signs are a corner of the screen sitting slightly proud, a hairline gap opening along the frame, or a device that rocks when you put it flat on a desk. Touch response near the affected area often goes strange before anything looks wrong.
If you see any of that, stop charging it and stop carrying it in a bag. Caught early it is a battery replacement and a reseal. Left alone, the pack keeps growing, the adhesive seal fails, and now you are paying for the display assembly as well. Swollen packs are removed carefully and disposed of through proper recycling rather than a bin.
Most keyboard complaints on a Surface Pro are not device faults at all. The cover attaches over a magnetic contact strip that collects pocket grit, hand cream and desk dust, and cleaning those contacts revives a surprising number of dead covers. The covers themselves are a wear item: the ribbon inside the fold cracks after enough opening and closing, and a cover can fail while the tablet is perfectly healthy. We test with a known-good cover before quoting anything on the device.
The kickstand is the other mechanical wear point. It uses a friction hinge, and after a few years of daily use it can stop holding an angle or start to feel gritty. That is a mechanical complaint rather than an electronic one, and it is worth mentioning when you drop the device off because it is easy to overlook on a bench test.
A Surface Pro that will not charge has three plausible causes that look identical from the outside: the Surface Connect port and its magnetic contacts, the power supply itself, and the internal charging circuit. Surface power supplies fail at the strain relief where the cable leaves the brick, which is invisible until you flex it. We meter the supply, then the port, then the board, so you replace the thing that actually failed rather than buying a charger for an internal fault. Newer models also charge over USB-C, which gives us a second path to test against.
That order of operations applies to the whole device. Where a Surface Pro sits on the serviceability line changes the entire conversation, so we establish that before quoting anything, and the same principle runs across our whole bench: find out what the machine will actually accept, then talk about money. The rest of the Surface range splits the same way. If yours will no longer boot at all, the first job is getting your files out, and that is a data recovery question rather than a repair question.

Repair or Replace
This is the brand where the honest answer is most often no, and we would rather say it before you have paid for a diagnostic than after.
On a bonded generation, a display assembly plus the labour to fit it can approach what the tablet is currently worth. A battery on the same device is cheaper but still involves lifting a screen that may not survive the second removal. We tell you the odds in plain terms: what we think will happen, what happens if the glass lets go, and what the same money would buy toward a replacement. Nobody at Orca IT is paid to talk you into a repair.
On the recent generations the answer flips. Storage is a quick job behind an access door, batteries and displays are real repairs with real parts, and a five-year service life is a reasonable plan rather than wishful thinking. That is also why the generation question matters so much when a business is deciding whether to standardise on Surface hardware.
Whatever we end up doing, your data comes first. Where the drive is removable we image it before any mechanical work begins, so a repair that goes wrong is an inconvenience rather than a loss. Where the storage is soldered we tell you that up front, because it changes how you should be backing the device up from that moment onward. Phantom touch usually comes from one of three things: a swollen battery pressing on the digitiser from behind, a damaged or poorly fitted display assembly, or electrical noise from a failing or non-genuine power supply. Try it on battery with the charger unplugged. If the ghost touches stop, the charger is the suspect and that is the cheapest outcome.
That is usually firmware and driver related rather than a hardware failure. Modern standby on these devices is sensitive to mismatched firmware levels, and a device that never truly sleeps also runs hot and flat in a bag. Applying the correct driver and firmware pack for the exact model resolves most of them without opening anything.
It depends entirely on the generation. On a recent Surface Pro it is a proper repair and worth doing. On a bonded older unit you are paying for careful screen removal as well as the pack, so we quote it against what the device is worth today and let you decide with the real numbers in front of you.
No. Memory is soldered to the mainboard on every Surface Pro, so the amount you bought is the amount you have for the life of the device. Storage is a different story on recent generations, where a larger drive is a straightforward swap. If the machine feels slow, we check thermals, storage health and background software before assuming it needs more hardware.
