Its problems are usually storage and software rather than dramatic hardware failure, and its repair economics are tight. We are straight with you about both.

The Go exists to hit a price. Understanding what was traded away to get there explains almost every complaint we hear about one.
The Surface Go is a compact detachable running full Windows, aimed at students, note takers, front-of-house use and anyone who wants a second machine that fits in a handbag. It is a genuinely useful thing. It is also built to a budget, which shows up in three places: modest processing power, limited storage on the entry configurations, and construction that is every bit as bonded as its larger siblings while the device itself is worth considerably less.
The entry configurations shipped with a small amount of slow eMMC storage soldered to the board. Windows itself, plus a handful of applications and a couple of years of updates, fills that almost completely. What follows is predictable: feature updates that fail repeatedly for want of free space, applications that will not install, a machine that crawls because there is no room for temporary files, and eventually a device that people assume is broken when it is simply full.
That is fixable without spending money on parts. We clear out the update caches and orphaned installers properly rather than emptying the recycle bin and hoping, move user data onto a memory card or cloud storage, and where the installation is genuinely tangled we do a clean Windows reinstall with the correct Surface driver and firmware pack. On configurations with a real drive rather than eMMC, an upgrade is sometimes possible and we will tell you if yours is one of them.
Mechanically the Go is a small Surface Pro. The display is bonded to the chassis, the battery sits behind it, and getting inside needs heat and patience. The difference is that the same careful work on a device worth a fraction as much rarely adds up. A cracked display assembly on a Go frequently costs more than the going rate for a used replacement unit in similar condition, and we would rather tell you that in the first phone call than after you have paid for a diagnostic.
A lot of Surface Go units live in classrooms and church or community programmes around the East Valley, usually in a cart, usually shared between several people a day. Those fleets fail in patterns: bent or missing keyboard covers, chargers that have been yanked out sideways for two years, and a slow drift of software state until half the cart behaves differently to the other half. We handle those as a batch rather than one device at a time, reimaging to a known-good build and returning them identical.
The other half of that job is making sure nothing important lives only on the device. Where a Go is being retired or replaced we handle the data migration so the user picks up where they left off, and where a device has already died we tell you honestly what our data recovery options are on soldered storage before you spend anything on the attempt.
Open Settings, then System, then Storage. If a Surface Go has only a couple of gigabytes free, that is very likely the whole problem, and it costs nothing to find out.
Common Surface Go Work
Software and storage dominate. Parts work comes last for a reason.
The single most common Surface Go job. Update caches cleared properly, user data relocated, and the feature update finally allowed to complete.
For devices that are too tangled to unpick, rebuilt with the correct Surface driver and firmware pack so battery life and sleep behave afterwards.
Short runtime and swelling. On a device this size a swollen pack presses straight into the screen, so it gets looked at quickly.
Surface Connect contacts, USB-C charging and the supply itself, tested separately. Damaged supplies are the usual answer on shared devices.
Cracked glass evaluated against what the device is worth. We give you the number and the alternative rather than just booking the repair.
Contact cleaning, known-good cover testing and pen pairing, which resolves a large share of what gets reported as a broken device.
Carts of shared devices returned to one identical build, with data moved off any unit being retired.
By Configuration
The configuration matters more on this device than on any other Surface.

Noticeably better in daily use and occasionally upgradeable. Worth checking before you assume the device is finished.
An extra radio and SIM path to go wrong. Connection faults here are often carrier profile or firmware rather than hardware.
Shared logins, local accounts gone stale, and twenty devices drifting apart. Handled as a batch and returned identical.
Honest Economics
We fix plenty of Surface Go units. We also talk people out of fixing plenty of them, and that is not a contradiction.
Anything that can be solved with software, storage housekeeping or a rebuild is worth doing, because it costs a modest amount of bench time and gives the device real life back. A tired Go that has been full for a year often behaves like a new machine once the storage situation is sorted out and the firmware is current. That is the best value work we do on this line.
Parts work is where it gets harder. The Go is bonded like its bigger siblings, so a display or a battery involves the same skilled, slow procedure, and the device underneath is worth a fraction of a Surface Pro. Once a repair passes what the machine would sell for in working order, we say so. Sometimes people go ahead anyway because the device is set up exactly how they like it, and that is a perfectly reasonable decision when it is made with the numbers in view.
What never changes is the order of operations. Data comes off first where it can, and where storage is soldered and the device will not boot, we tell you the realistic odds before you commit to anything. That is the classic Surface Go complaint on the small storage configurations. Feature updates need a chunk of free space to stage themselves, and the device has never had much to give. We clear update caches and orphaned installers properly, relocate user data, and then let the update run. It is a bench job, not a parts job.
Not internally on the entry models, because that storage is soldered. There is a microSD slot under the kickstand, and a decent card is a genuinely useful place to keep documents, photos and media so the internal storage is left for Windows and applications. It is the cheapest improvement available on this device.
For writing, browsing, the usual classroom web tools, video calls and light spreadsheets, yes, provided the storage is not full and the firmware is current. For photo or video editing, large datasets or anything with a serious application behind it, no. We would rather tell you that than sell you an upgrade that cannot change the underlying hardware.
The glass, touch layer and panel are one bonded assembly on this device, so it is a full assembly replacement. On a Go that often approaches or exceeds what a comparable used unit costs. We quote it properly, tell you what a replacement device would cost instead, and recover the data either way so nothing is lost while you decide.
Yes, and that is the sensible way to do it. We assess the whole batch, sort out the ones that need cleanup or rebuilding, flag the ones that are genuinely finished, and return everything on one identical image so the cart behaves consistently. Covers and chargers get tested at the same time because they fail more often than the devices.
Longer than most people get out of one, if the storage is managed. The usual reason a Go is retired early is that it filled up, stopped updating, and got labelled as broken. Kept clean and current it stays useful as a note-taking and browsing machine well past the point people expect. We will tell you when yours has genuinely reached the end.
