Chicago, IL

IT for a city that still makes and moves things

Chicago is one of the few American metros where trading floors, freight terminals and machine shops are all part of the same regional economy, and all three call us about different failures.

In the Loop and along LaSalle Street the money businesses dominate: proprietary trading firms, brokers, funds, accountants and the law firms attached to them. Their IT is latency-sensitive, heavily regulated and allergic to change during market hours. Every patch, reboot and firewall change gets scheduled outside the session, and backup and logging are audit material rather than housekeeping. FINRA and SEC expectations shape what has to be retained and provable.

Move west into Fulton Market and River North and the picture changes to agencies, tech and professional services running almost entirely on Microsoft 365 and SaaS, with hybrid staff and very little on-premises equipment. Move out toward the O’Hare corridor, Elk Grove Village, Schaumburg and the industrial south and southwest, and you are into freight brokerage, third-party logistics, distribution and manufacturing, TMS and WMS platforms, EDI feeds to customers, barcode scanners on Wi-Fi, and shop-floor machines running an operating system nobody is allowed to touch.

That last category is where Chicago businesses lose the most money and get the least attention from generic providers. A warehouse in Bedford Park with dead spots between racking loses hours a day. A freight broker whose EDI connection silently stops updating loses customers. A machine shop where the CAM workstation is also the file server loses everything at once. We segment those environments properly under Pod Guard, VLANs, isolated networks for legacy machinery, controller-managed Wi-Fi surveyed for the racking layout, and backups that assume the shop floor will eventually be hit.

Orca IT is based in Gilbert, Arizona and does not have staff in Illinois. Remote is how the software, server, cloud, security and network configuration work gets done, through remote support and Pod Care. Cabling, rack work, hardware swaps and access point mounting need a body, so we arrange a vetted local technician for that step with your approval and direct the work live. The same arrangement covers our clients in Indianapolis, Detroit and Columbus.

How It Works

Remote support that respects market hours and shift changes

01

Tell us the window

Every client sets a change window in Central time. Trading firms get after-close work; distribution clients get between-shift work. We schedule to your clock and confirm in writing.

02

Approve the connection

Attended sessions run from a one-time link you launch. Servers and always-on machines carry an approved agent so patching and maintenance happen when nobody is working.

03

Watch and interrupt

Encrypted, outbound, visible on your screen. You can take the mouse back or kill the session with one click. Every connection is logged for your audit trail.

04

Document and hand back

Root cause in plain English plus an updated environment record, so the next engineer on your pod does not rediscover your EDI setup from scratch.

Arizona ignores daylight saving. That helps you.

We are one hour behind Chicago in winter and two in summer, so your 5pm crisis lands in the middle of our afternoon rather than at the end of it.

Focus Areas

What Chicago businesses hire us for

Six services that cover the Loop, the agencies and the freight and manufacturing belt.

Warehouse Wi-Fi

Coverage that survives racking

Controller-managed access points planned around actual rack layouts, roaming that does not drop a scanner mid-aisle, and separate networks for guest, corporate and equipment traffic.

Logistics

EDI and TMS reliability

Monitoring on the integrations that quietly matter, EDI transmissions, TMS and WMS connections, scheduled jobs, so a stalled feed is caught by an alert instead of by your customer.

Finance

Controls for regulated firms

Retention and logging, encrypted endpoints, MFA and conditional access, privileged access separation and the documentation examiners and cyber insurers keep asking for.

Manufacturing

Legacy machines, isolated safely

Shop-floor controllers running unsupported operating systems get segmented onto their own VLAN with tight rules, so they keep running without becoming the way ransomware enters.

Help Desk

Pod Response for hybrid teams

Same-business-day human response for staff in the office, at home in Naperville or on the road, with after-hours emergency cover for Pod Care clients.

Continuity

Backups built for bad winters

Immutable offsite copies, tested restores and a written recovery plan, because a February power event at a single-site business is a business continuity test whether you planned one or not.

Chicago remote IT support questions

Can you really manage a warehouse network from Arizona?

The configuration, monitoring, segmentation and troubleshooting, yes, modern access points and switches are controller-managed and we work on them daily. What we cannot do from here is mount an access point or pull cable, so a physical survey or install is handled by a vetted local technician while we design the layout and configure the gear.

How do you handle change windows for a trading firm?

Nothing disruptive happens during market hours. We agree a standing window in Central time, usually after close or overnight, and emergency changes are discussed rather than assumed. Every change is logged so you can show what happened and when.

What time zone do you work in?

Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year while Chicago changes twice, so we are two hours behind you from March to November and one hour behind for the rest of the year. Our afternoons overlap your end of day, which is when most escalations actually appear.

We have a machine tool running Windows 7 that the vendor will not update. What now?

You are far from alone in this region. The realistic answer is isolation rather than replacement: put it on its own VLAN with strictly limited access, remove internet exposure, protect what connects to it, and back up the configuration and the host that talks to it. We document the risk clearly so it is a decision rather than an accident.

Do you support multiple Chicago-area sites?

Yes. Multi-site is normal for our clients, an office in the Loop, a warehouse in the southwest suburbs, staff at home. We standardise identity, endpoint management and network configuration across all of them so a user has the same experience and the same protection at each.

What happens when our internet goes down?

Monitoring flags the outage, usually before your staff report it, and we work the carrier ticket for you. Where continuity matters we configure failover to a secondary circuit or cellular backup in advance, so a fibre cut becomes a slower day rather than a closed one.
