Detroit IT support for the supplier network

Orca IT delivers remote managed IT, cyber security and help desk to Detroit-area businesses from Gilbert, Arizona. One pod of our own engineers takes every ticket. Most of our work here sits with automotive suppliers, engineering firms and tooling shops that answer to customers with strict security expectations.

Focus Areas

Where automotive suppliers actually need help

Six areas drawn from Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, engineering services firms, tool and die shops and the professional businesses around them.

CAD

Engineering data performance

Storage and network paths sized for large assemblies and simulation output, so opening a model is not a coffee break, plus versioning and controlled access to drawings and revisions.

PLM

Product data management support

Vaults and PLM clients that behave, backed up as a system rather than as a folder, with the database and file store treated as one recoverable unit instead of two hopeful ones.

Shop Floor

Machine network segmentation

CNC controllers, CMM inspection systems and press equipment on operating systems that will never be updated, isolated on their own segments with explicit, monitored rules.

Customer Audits

Evidence for OEM requirements

Access control, MFA, endpoint protection, logging, patch records and incident response documented, so a customer’s information security assessment is answered from records.

Defense Work

NIST 800-171 controls

For shops doing defense and ground vehicle work: scoped access to controlled data, encryption, media handling and audit logging, prepared as evidence for prime review.

Continuity

Recovery for a production business

Immutable offsite backups, tested restores with written results, and a recovery order that recognises which systems have to be back before the next shift starts.

Engineering data, machine tools and customer audits

The automotive supply chain is not one industry. It is thousands of businesses, each answering to a customer that inspects how they handle data.

The engineering side of this region, design and validation firms in Troy, Southfield, Auburn Hills and Dearborn, along with the suppliers scattered across the metro, runs on large CAD assemblies, simulation output and product data management systems. The most common complaint we hear is performance: models that take minutes to open, sluggish vault check-ins, and workstations blamed for what is nearly always a storage or network path problem. It is diagnosable remotely and it is usually fixable without new hardware, which is not what the last vendor told you.

The manufacturing side has a different pattern. Tool and die shops, machining, stamping and fabrication run equipment controlled by PCs that were validated years ago and cannot be updated. Those machines are not going away and replacing them is a capital decision, not an IT one. The right answer is segmentation: isolate them on their own network with explicit rules, remove internet exposure, harden and monitor everything that communicates with them, and back up their configurations. We document that as a deliberate risk decision rather than leaving it as an accident.

Then there are the audits. OEM and Tier 1 customers now push detailed information security expectations down through the supply chain, and shops doing defense or ground vehicle work face NIST SP 800-171 requirements on top. A twenty-person shop suddenly needs MFA, endpoint detection and response, access reviews, logging, patch records and a written incident response plan. We implement and document those technical controls and prepare the evidence through Pod Guard. We help you meet the requirements; assessment and certification come from authorised bodies.

Orca IT is family owned in Gilbert, Arizona and has no Michigan staff. Everything above is delivered over encrypted remote sessions under Pod Care. Physical work, a failed drive in a vault server, a switch in a plant, cable across a shop, goes to a vetted local technician we arrange with your consent, with our engineers directing the visit and configuring the equipment. Midwest neighbours run the same model in Chicago, Columbus and Indianapolis.

How It Works

Remote support scheduled around production

01

Shift schedule first

We record when your lines run and when engineering is under deadline, and non-urgent maintenance is planned into the gaps rather than dropped on top of a build.

02

You approve access

Attended sessions start from a one-time link you launch. Servers, vault hosts and always-on machines carry approved agents for unattended overnight work.

03

Encrypted and visible

Outbound encrypted connections that stay visible on your screen and end with one click. Every session is logged, which matters when a customer audit asks who touched what.

04

Change records kept

What changed, when and why is documented, including changes we deliberately avoided on machine-connected systems and the reasoning behind that.

Eastern time, covered into your evening.

Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so we are three hours behind Detroit in summer and two in winter. Second-shift problems reach a working desk.

Detroit remote IT support questions

Do you have staff in Michigan?

No. Orca IT is based in Gilbert, Arizona and family owned since 2015, supporting Detroit-area clients remotely with our own engineers. Physical work is arranged through a vetted local technician for that specific task, with your consent, while our team directs the visit and handles configuration.

Our CAD files open slowly. Is that really fixable remotely?

Almost always. The usual causes are a saturated or misconfigured network path, storage that was never sized for the assemblies you now build, antivirus scanning enormous project files, or a sync client fighting the vault. All of those are diagnosed and corrected remotely, and a new workstation would not have solved any of them.

How do you back up a PLM or vault system?

As one unit. The database and the file store have to be consistent with each other, so backing up a folder is not enough. We configure application-aware backup, keep an immutable offsite copy, and test a full restore so you know the vault comes back intact rather than in two mismatched halves.

A customer sent us an information security assessment. Can you complete it?

We provide the technical answers and the supporting evidence, MFA, endpoint detection, encryption, patch cadence, logging, access reviews, backup testing and incident response. Where something is missing we tell you what closing it costs. You sign the document, but you will not be guessing at any section.

What is the time difference with Arizona?

Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year while Michigan changes twice, so we are three hours behind Detroit from March to November and two hours behind for the rest of the year. That means our desk is still working through your second shift.

Can you work with our machine tool vendors?

Yes, and we prefer to. We hold the technical conversation with the equipment vendor about network requirements, supported configurations and what we are permitted to change. That protects your support agreement and stops the vendor and the IT provider blaming each other while a machine sits idle.
