This is a city where a twenty-person company can own genuinely valuable intellectual property and run laboratory equipment that costs more than the building.
The optics, imaging and photonics cluster is the defining feature. Decades of camera, lens and film manufacturing left behind an engineering base that reinvented itself into precision optics, laser and photonics companies, medical imaging suppliers, coatings and thin-film specialists, metrology firms and the machine shops that support them. Their IT profile is distinctive: a small office headcount, a very large equipment population, and a network that grew around whatever the last piece of test gear required. Interferometers, spectrometers, laser controllers and inspection systems typically run locked-down or obsolete operating systems that the vendor forbids you to update. We isolate each one on its own segment, allow only the traffic it genuinely needs, image the disk so it can be rebuilt in an afternoon, and keep company credentials off it. That is the highest-value work we do in most first months here, and it sits inside our network administration service.
Intellectual property is the second concern and it is the real one. Optical designs, process recipes, test data and customer specifications are the company's value, and they usually live spread across a file server, a cloud drive, a version control system and several engineers' laptops. The way that data leaves is almost always identity, not hacking: a phished account, a contractor whose access was never revoked, or a departing engineer with a personal cloud sync running. Our security work concentrates there, phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, conditional access tied to managed devices, least-privilege file permissions, alerting on bulk downloads, and offboarding that revokes everything the same day.
Healthcare and higher education form the third and fourth layers. Leave the software alone and change the environment around it. We put the machine on an isolated segment with no general internet route, permit only the traffic its vendor software requires, take a full disk image so a hardware failure means a two-hour rebuild rather than a six-week vendor engagement, and make sure it never stores company credentials.

Yes, and engineering companies nearly always do. We enforce BitLocker and FileVault, patch both platforms, hold both to the same identity provider and the same backup expectations, and do not push you toward one platform for our own convenience.
It works well. Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, so we are three hours behind you in summer and two in winter, and our engineers start early specifically to cover the Eastern morning. Nothing, if the environment is designed for it. Files and mail are cloud-hosted, phones follow users to a laptop or mobile app, and remote access does not depend on a device sitting in an office nobody can reach. We test that path before winter rather than discovering the gaps on the day.
