Remote IT Support · Grand Rapids, MI

IT for a city that still makes things

West Michigan kept a serious manufacturing base while building one of the strongest regional healthcare sectors in the Midwest, and a craft food and beverage industry alongside it. Orca IT supports all three remotely from Gilbert, Arizona.

What We Cover

Remote services for West Michigan businesses

Six areas weighted for manufacturers, clinical practices and food producers.

OT Isolation

Machine controllers, contained

VLAN separation, strict egress rules and full disk imaging for CNC, finishing, upholstery and packaging systems that vendors will not let you patch.

ERP

Keeping the business system quick

Database health, workstation specification, print paths and the month-end slowdown everyone has quietly accepted.

Clinical IT

Practice systems and HIPAA

EHR performance, imaging handoffs, access control, audit logging and tested restores for practices across the region.

Food Safety

Production records you can produce

Immutable backup, access control and audit logging around batch, lot and quality data for breweries, bakeries and food processors.

Ransomware

Backups an attacker cannot delete

Immutable offsite copies with tested restores, endpoint detection and segmentation, so recovery is a rebuild rather than a ransom.

Help Desk

The same engineers every time

Under Pod Response you get a fixed set of engineers who know your plant, answering the same business day, with after-hours cover on Pod Care.

West Michigan

Three industries that break in different directions

Grand Rapids is unusual in having genuine depth in manufacturing, healthcare and food production at the same time, and each has its own failure mode.

Manufacturing is the historic backbone, and office furniture is its most visible expression. Around the large producers sits an extensive supply base: metal fabrication, plastics and injection moulding, upholstery and textiles, finishing and coatings, tooling, packaging and contract assembly, plus the automotive and aerospace suppliers scattered through the region. The technical reality on those floors is consistent. Production equipment is controlled by computers a vendor configured years ago, running operating systems no one supports, sitting on the same flat network as the accounting laptop. We fix that by containment rather than replacement: each controller moves onto its own segment, only the traffic it genuinely needs is permitted, a full disk image is taken so a failure means an afternoon rather than a vendor engagement, and company credentials stay off it. That work is the core of our network administration service.

Healthcare is the second pillar and it is large for a metro this size. The medical mile and the practice, clinic and specialty group economy around it create a dense private healthcare sector with genuine HIPAA obligations. We help those practices meet the Security Rule's technical safeguards through access control, audit logging, encryption and tested backups, delivered under our security programme. We will not tell you we can certify your compliance, because no IT provider can do that.

The craft food and beverage industry is the third and the most underserved. Breweries, distilleries, bakeries and food producers run production systems, batch and lot records, temperature monitoring, point-of-sale in taprooms and retail spaces, and increasingly a distribution operation on top. Their IT gets treated as an afterthought until a card-payment issue or a lost batch record makes it urgent. We separate payment traffic from staff and production networks, protect batch and quality records with immutable backup and access control, and keep the point-of-sale systems patched.

All three benefit from the same underlying discipline: monitoring that catches a failing drive before it costs a shift, patching that happens without chasing, and a remote support desk with named engineers, all under a flat per-user managed IT plan. The full nationwide directory is at remote IT support.

Eastern time, and why our afternoon helps

Arizona keeps standard time year round, so we are three hours behind Grand Rapids from March to November and two hours behind in winter. Our engineers start early to cover the Eastern morning, and our afternoon covers your evening, useful when the only safe time to reboot a production server is after the last shift has closed out.

Ask about the machine nobody will touch

Every West Michigan plant has one. We will tell you exactly how to make it survivable without changing a line of the vendor's software.

How It Works

Four steps, sequenced around production

01

Free Deep Dive

We inventory office and production IT, identify what could stop a shift or a clinic, and write it up plainly.

02

Connect

Agents deploy remotely across office machines. Production controllers are documented and imaged instead, where that is the safer route.

03

Separate and secure

Segmentation, backup, patching and account cleanup, scheduled around your production and clinic calendars.

04

Operate

Continuous monitoring, agreed maintenance windows, layered security under Pod Guard, and a regular leadership review.

Grand Rapids IT questions

Our machine vendor forbids updating the controller PC. What are our options?

Contain it. We move the machine to an isolated network segment with no general internet route, permit only the traffic its software genuinely requires, take a full disk image so a hardware failure is a two-hour rebuild, and keep company credentials off it entirely. The vendor's configuration is left untouched and the risk stops being open-ended.

Can you support a medical practice from Arizona?

Yes, because nearly all practice IT is remote work anyway: EHR performance, identity, mail security, patching and backup. We sign a business associate agreement, keep our own access controlled and logged, and coordinate a vetted local partner for physical jobs like replacing a failed workstation.

We run a brewery with a taproom. What should we worry about?

Two things. First, card payments: keep point-of-sale terminals on a network segment separate from staff machines and production systems, and keep them patched. Second, your batch and quality records, which should be backed up in a form nobody can alter or delete and restricted to the people who genuinely need to change them.

When would you patch our production systems?

Only in windows your operations lead agrees, never on a generic overnight schedule that might land during a shift. Updates roll out in stages so a bad patch cannot reach every machine at once, and we verify afterwards that the line and the office both came back cleanly.

How does the time difference work in practice?

Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, so we are three hours behind you in summer and two in winter. Our engineers start early to cover your morning, and our afternoon lines up with your evening, which is the right window for anything that needs the plant quiet.

Do you use subcontractors or offshore staff?

No. Every engineer is an Orca IT employee and we have been family owned since 2015. When a job truly requires someone in your building we arrange a vetted local partner, but the diagnosis, scope and supervision stay with our team.

Which system in your plant would hurt most if it stopped tomorrow?

We will find it in the free assessment, tell you how exposed it is, and give you a plan that does not require replacing anything you do not need to replace.
