Overview

Research Triangle growth breaks IT in predictable ways

Raleigh sits at the point of a triangle that produces an unusual density of biotech, pharmaceutical services, clinical research, medical devices, software and university spinouts, plus the state government and professional sector that keeps the region steady.

Fast-growing companies here tend to fail in the same sequence. First, hiring outpaces device management, and laptops go out with no enrollment, no encryption verification and no standard build. Second, cloud services multiply without a central identity strategy, so ex-employees keep access to a tool nobody remembers buying. Third, a customer or an investor sends a security questionnaire, and nobody can answer it. Fourth, someone discovers that the backup nobody has checked has been failing for months. We have walked into that sequence many times, and the fix is not exotic. It is discipline applied early.

That means identity first: Microsoft Entra ID as the single front door, MFA everywhere, conditional access, single sign-on wherever a vendor supports it, and joiner-mover-leaver processes so accounts are created and removed on purpose. Then devices: enrolled, encrypted, patched, protected with real EDR and rebuildable from a documented standard image. Then data: knowing where it lives, backing it up with immutable copies, and testing the restores. That sequence is what Pod Care installs, with the security layer described under Pod Guard.

The life science side adds particular requirements. Clinical research organizations and biotech firms handle study data and often inherit sponsor security expectations, sometimes including electronic records and signature controls. Lab environments have instrument-attached computers running vendor-locked software that must not be patched casually and must not be exposed to the open internet. We isolate those, document them, image them, and keep vendor remote access brokered and logged instead of permanently open. Medical device companies get the same treatment plus documentation aimed at customer security reviews.

On hours, North Carolina observes daylight saving and Arizona does not, so our offset shifts. From March to November we are three hours behind Raleigh, and from November to March two hours. In practice, our morning starts as your late morning, our engineers cover your entire afternoon, and we keep working for hours after your team logs off. For a software company, that after-hours window is where deployments, migrations and infrastructure changes belong. For a research organization, it is when a server can be rebooted without interrupting anyone. Continuous monitoring covers the early Eastern morning, and Pod Care includes after-hours emergency response.

Raleigh clients frequently sit in the same rotation as our Charlotte and Atlanta accounts. The delivery model is on the remote support page and the full metro list is at remote IT support.

The questionnaire will come

Every growing Triangle company eventually receives a customer or investor security review. Building the controls before that email arrives costs a fraction of scrambling afterward, and it never delays a deal.

Included

What we put in place for a growing Raleigh company

Six foundations that make later growth cheap instead of painful.

One identity front door

Entra ID with MFA and conditional access, single sign-on to your major tools, and a documented process for adding and removing people.

Standard device builds

A documented image, automated enrollment, encryption verified and EDR deployed before a laptop reaches a new hire's desk.

Lab and instrument isolation

Vendor-locked instrument PCs kept off the general network with controlled, logged vendor access and offline recovery images.

Data location mapping

A plain record of what data you hold, which service holds it and how it is backed up, updated at every business review.

Security review readiness

Policies, control descriptions and technical evidence assembled in advance so a customer questionnaire takes hours instead of weeks.

Scalable licensing

License right-sizing and a plan for what each new hire costs, so growth does not produce surprise invoices from four vendors at once.

Raleigh remote IT questions

How do Arizona hours line up with Raleigh?

We are three hours behind you from March to November and two hours behind from November to March, since Arizona does not observe daylight saving. Our engineers cover your afternoon completely and keep working after you close, which is the ideal window for deployments and infrastructure changes.

We are hiring quickly. How does onboarding work?

We build a standard image and an enrollment process, then each new hire's device arrives configured, encrypted, patched and protected with their accounts already provisioned to the right groups. Offboarding runs the same way in reverse, which is the part most fast-growing companies get wrong.

Can you support laboratory instrument computers?

Yes, within the limits your instrument vendor sets. We do not force updates onto vendor-locked systems. We isolate them on their own network segment, control and log vendor remote access, document the configuration and keep recovery images so a disk failure is not a multi-week outage.

A customer sent us a security questionnaire. Can you help answer it?

We help by making the answers true and then supplying the technical evidence: access control records, endpoint protection coverage, patch reports, backup test results, logging retention and an incident response plan. You keep ownership of the response, and we make sure nothing in it is wishful thinking.

Do you work with companies that have no internal IT at all?

Frequently. Pod Care is designed to be the whole IT function for companies without internal staff, covering help desk, monitoring, security, backup, vendor management and planning. As you grow and eventually hire internally, we shift to supporting that person rather than competing with them.

What if we outgrow you?

Then you leave cleanly. There is no long-term contract, you own your hardware, licenses and documentation, and we hand over configuration details without drama. We would rather part well than hold a client hostage with a term commitment.

Build the boring foundations now.

They are what let a Triangle company grow without an IT crisis.
