Software companies lose availability. Hardware companies lose intellectual property, test data and production time, and they usually discover the gap during a customer audit.
Fremont is where a large share of the Bay Area's physical engineering happens. The industrial districts around Warm Springs, Bayside and the corridors off Kato Road and Fremont Boulevard hold contract manufacturers, electronics assembly, battery and energy companies, robotics and automation firms, medical device makers and the prototype shops that serve all of them. The IT profile is unusual: a small office population, a large equipment population, and a network that has grown by accretion around whatever the last piece of test gear needed.
The first real problem is separation. Test benches, machine controllers, environmental chambers and inspection systems often run embedded or ancient Windows builds that cannot be patched and must not be exposed. In too many shops they sit on the same flat network as the finance laptop. We fix that with VLANs, firewall rules that allow only what each device genuinely needs, and full imaging so a controller can be rebuilt rather than mourned. That is core network administration work and it is usually the highest-value thing we do in the first month.
The second is intellectual property. Mechanical drawings, firmware, test results and supplier terms are the company's actual value, and they tend to live across a mix of a file server, a cloud drive, a version control system and a few engineers' laptops. We tighten that: identity in Entra ID with phishing-resistant MFA, conditional access that checks device health, encryption on every endpoint, sensible data-loss controls, and an offboarding process that revokes access the same day rather than the same quarter. Our security work is aimed at what a departing engineer or a supplier-impersonation email can actually take.
The third is growth. Hardware companies scale in steps, not curves: a funding round or a big order doubles headcount and suddenly the arrangement that worked at twenty people falls apart at fifty. Standard device builds, automated account provisioning and a real service desk are what make that survivable. Yes, for the great majority of it. Network configuration, controller isolation, imaging, identity, endpoint management and backup are all remote work. What is not remote is physically racking a switch or replacing a failed machine, and for that we arrange a vetted local partner with our engineer directing the job.
Isolate rather than upgrade, in most cases. The equipment vendor will not support a newer operating system, so we put the machine on a segment with no general internet access, allow only the specific traffic it needs, image the whole disk so it can be rebuilt quickly, and keep company credentials off it entirely. The risk becomes managed rather than open-ended.
By controlling identity first, because that is how data actually leaves. Phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, conditional access tied to managed devices, least-privilege permissions on file locations, alerting on unusual bulk downloads, and an offboarding checklist that revokes everything the day someone leaves. Encryption on endpoints handles the lost-laptop case.
No. Engineering companies almost always run both, and we manage them side by side with equivalent standards: FileVault and BitLocker enforced, patching handled, the same identity provider, and the same backup expectations. We do not push you toward one platform to make our lives easier.
